AMATEUR BOXING
TRAINING COLLEGE STUDENTS TRY-OUT TOURNEY, Considering that until about three weeks ago many of the competitors had never donned a glove, the standard of the boxing at the Training College students’ try-out tourney, which was held'last night in Marama Hall, was surprisingly good. All of the bouts were of three two-minute rounds, and, while the majority of the boxers were obviously comparative strangers to the ring, the contests were, without exception, fast and lively, the general all-round form displayed reflecting considerable credit on the work of the college instructor, Mr A. Godman. A useful innovation was the introduction of “tiring” contests, in which a competitor holding a bye had to fight a three-round exhibition bout, thus obviating the possibility of a man who had already had one or perhaps two fights meeting a fresh opponent. During the evening exhibition bouts were boxed by M. Parr, the New Zealand University bantam-weight champion, and W. Drew, the ex-fly-weight champion of Otago, and P, Dolan and J. Moore. Messrs S. Paris, E. C. Isaacs and R. Morris acted as referees, and Messrs C. Brown and W. D. Wilson as judges. The following are the results:— FEATHER-WEIGHT First Round W. Barsdell 8.13 beat C. S. McArthur 8.0 on points. R, Greaves 9.4 beat F. O’Connell 9.0, the referee stopping the bout in the second round. G. Johnston 9.0 beat C. F. Scott 9.2 on points. Semi-final Johnston beat Greaves on points. W. Barsdell, a bye. Final Johnston beat Barsdell, the referee stopping the bout in the third round. LIGHT-WEIGHT First Round J. W. Fraser 10.0 beat L. Rutherford 9.8 on points. G. S. Botting 9.8, beat L. 10.0 on points. Final Fraser defaulted to Botting. WELTER-WEIGHT First Round R. Cochlin 10.2 beat J. Sutherland 10.8 on points. E. Robertson 10.4, a bye. Final Cochlin beat Robertson oh points. MIDDLE-WEIGHT First Round J. Moodie 10.2 beat L. Bathgate 11.2 on points. R. G. Pilling 11.3, a bye.
