PORT CHALMERS BOROUGH

MONTHLY COUNCIL MEETING The first monthly meeting of the newly-elected council of the Borough of Port Chalmers was held last evening. The Mayor, Mr T. Scollay, occupied the chair, and there were also present Crs E. H. Cook, J. H._ Williamson. J. M. Sansom, W. Leftwich L. G. Jack, N. Macdonald, J. Knewstubb, W. Mead. W. Sutherland and J. S. Thorn. APPRECIATION EXPRESSED On the motion of Or Jack it was decided to frame a minute expressing appreciation of the services of Crs F. <f. Smith to the borough during the 17 years of his membership of the Borough Council. INVITATION ACCEPTED An invitation to the Mayor and councillors to attend divine worship at Holy Trinity Church on June 19 was received from the vicar (the Rev. E. G. Wilson). The invitation was accepted. BUS TIME TABLE The town clerk, Dunedin, wrote indicating that the Dunedin Metropolitan Licensing Authority had approved amendments to the bus time table between Dunedin and Port Chalmers. A further letter was received from the bus manager, stating that the amended time table had come Into operation from May 8. The letters were received. FIRE BOARD LEVY The Port Chalmers Fire Board adr vised that the levy on the council for the year ending March 31, 1939, would be £IOB 18s. The levy for last year, It was reported, was £lO7 10s lOd. The letter was received. MAYOR’S HONORARIUM The Mayor’s honorarium was fixed at the same sum as last year, £SO per year. GAS PLANT The report of the gas manager for the month ended April 30 stated:—During the month of April 22 tons 4cwt of coal were carbonised, yielding 301,900 cubic feet of gas, an average of 13,600 feet per ton. The new bed of retorts has now been in operation for the past five weeks, and is working very satisfactorily. ' The manufacturing plant is in good working order, and giving no trouble. During the month two purifiers were cleaned out and refilled with fresh oxide. During the Easter period consumers m Magnetic street were put to some inconvenience caused by water in the main. One of the services was opened and a fairly large hole was found, which appeared to have been made with a pick. This was repaired, and there has been no recurrence of the trouble. The report was adopted. ENGINEER’S REPORT The borough engineer, Mr F. J. Williams, reported as follows: — Main Highways. - Dunedm-Port Chalmers: Very little work has been done on this highway since last report with the exception of attention to the shoulders. Port Chalmers-Aramoana: Repairs have been effected to the sealed surface in several places and metalling his been spread on the unsealed portion. Allen highway: The work of sealing portion of this highway has been completed, and very satisfactory results have been obtained. General Work.—The following works have been carried out since my last report:—Meridian street footpath has been tar-sprayed and some of the footpath in Grey street has been treated similarly. In Grey stret a retaining wall has been erected, and the filling will be carried out as soon as the wall is sufficiently matured to do so. In Slant street the ruts caused by the stormwater running on the centre of the road have been filled. Foul sewers in Burns and Fox streets were cleared of blockage. t Extension of Sewers. —Engineering surveys have been made to extend the Meridian street sewer to the new residence, and this work is in hand. Levels have been taken for the extension of the Slant street sewer to the new residence being erected there by Mr Fletcher. , No. 13 E.B. Workers.—Eleven men have been employed under this scheme, and they have been engaged chiefly on Beach road improvements and at Rangi Park. Water—The water main in Mary street has been repaired, and a oneinch service 360 feet in length in Bellevue place has been relaid with net* material. An endeavour was mads to get a reasonable supply of water through the old one-inch main, but u was found to be in such a bad statt of corrosion that new material had to be used. The water officer has been engaged in cutting gorse and attending to work at the reservoir. He ha* repaired the two-inch valve at the dock and a three-inch valve in Scotia street. The mains have been flushed, regularly. The reservoir is down six inches. The report was received.
