INVERCARGILL TRACK WORK
HORSES FOR DUNEDIN MEETING (Special to Daily Times) INVERCARGILL, May 31. The majority of the Invercargill candidates for the Dunedin Jockey Club's winter meeting were galloped this morning, when the poles were about 30 feet out and the track was in heavy order. Signaller and Kelly the Crow were schooled over a round of the steeplechase course, and gave a good exhibition. Kelly the Crow was inclined to get in too close to the fence at the mile post, but his jumping apart from this was of a high standard. Signaller’s display was in keeping with the good exhibitions he has given in previous bouts. Triplecone, Recall, and Baltruin ran six furlongs in Irnin 21sec, the first two in 25 2-ssec, and the last half in 55 3-ssec. Triplecone set a fast pace over the first three furlongs, but tailed off at the finish. Recall carried on to beat Baltruin by three lengths. Recall appears to appreciate a heavy trgck, but Baltruin was not knocked about, and had more in reserve than the winner. Wild Irishman and Burwood were sent out to run a mile, but Burwood came home on his own. Wild Irishman having been pulled up, as his saddle slipped. The mile was run in Imin 58 2-sscc. the last half in 59 2-ssec. Wild Irishman has come on a lot since he raced at the Southland meeting, while Burwood retains his form well. Johnny and Moneyless ran a mile in Imin 53 l-ssec, the first half in 57sec and the last half in 56 l-ssec. This was the best gallop of the morning, as the pair was doing its work comfortably at the finish. Johnny has greatly improved, while Moneyless can handle himself in any sort of going. Brilliant Boa beat Amelita home over a mile in Imin 56sec, the first three in 42sec, the half in 56sec, and the last half in 60sec. It was a good gallop on the part of Brilliant Boa, as he finished on well; but Amelita did not work at all generously. Waitoru and Invadere finished well clear of Barley Almond and Wynwood over seven furlongs run in Imin 37sec. the first two in 27sec. three in 40 2-ssec, and the last half in 56 3-ssec. Waitoru opened up a lead from his companions over the first three furlongs, and was under a strong hold at the finish. He is one of the best conditioned horses at headquarters at the present time. Invadere shaped well, but Wynwood and Barley Almond did not perform up to expectations. Johnny is now a member of R. E. McLellan’s team, and at Wingatui he will race in the colours of Messrs McDonald and Cunningham, for whom Milford and Good Round have raced. With tracks to his liking, Johnny has been responsible for some good work in recent weeks. On the second day of the Dunedin meeting he. is likely to be strongly fancied over a mile and a-quarter. G. Barclay will ride Waitoru, Moneyless, and Silkwood at Wingatui on Saturday, while Invadere will be ridden by R. Humphries. Western Song has been sold by Mr A. F. Speight to a Nelson owner, and will be transferred to his new quarters within the next few days. Western Song has been spelling since the Invercargill meeting, but he appears sound again and is in good order.
