WOMEN’S INSTITUTES
Reports of meetings of branches are requested, but they should bo furnished promptly, for the publication of reports that are not supplied within a week from the date of the meeting cannot be promised. The sixth birthday party of the Lovell’s Flat Institute was celebrated on May 24 by a concert and dance. After the president (Miss Clarke) had extended a hearty welcome to all, including numerous visitors from neighbouring institutes, the following programme was presented. National songs, members of the Institute; pianoforte solo, Miss May Moffat; song, Miss Phyllis Martin (Milton); Highland dancing. Miss Thelma Robinson; playctte, seven members: elocutionary items, Miss C. Lowery; Highland dancing, Mrs A. Johnstone (Dunedin); short playette, four members; selection on bagpipes, Mr R. Burleigh (Milton). The step-dancers were accompanied by Mr Burleigh on the bagpipes. The birthday cake, which had been given by Mrs Lowery and iced in a novel fashion, was then displayed, the usual ceremonies of cutting being carried out by Mrs MacMillan (Pukekoma). Mrs James (Hillend) and Mrs Gray (Milton). The mad-hatters’ parade was won by Mrs Wright tKaitangata) and Mr C. Clarke. After supper the floor was cleared for dancing. the music being supplied by Miss R Fletcher, with extras played by Mr Burleigh (bagpipes) and Mr Crawford (piano).
