AVIATION SCHOLARSHIPS

BALLOT FOR CANDIDATES - A VALUABLE SCHEME (Per United Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 30. Three members of the Aircraft Club, who arc to undergo examination for the first scholarship provided by the club, were selected by ballot at a meeting of the organisation to-night. Those whose numbers were drawn were as follows:300, A. E. Lipscombe, Brooklyn; 101, R. J. Thompson, Southbridge, Canterbury; 192, J. C. Kirk, Herne Bay, Auckland. The number of members who participated in the ballot was 241. The chairman (Mr C. W. Batten) explained that members paid a subscription of £3 4s a year, or 2s per week, receiving as well the right to participate in the ballots for scholarships for a first, second, or third-year course in aeronautics, each year being complete in itself. No one must suppose that such a course would qualify one as a ground engineer, but, to a person interested in aviation, it was valuable instruction, and gave a young man an idea of what was involved in an aviation career. , . The three selected as candidates will go before an examining board. The course will consist of instruction m piloting and ground engineering to the value of £66. It was announced that membership wag increasing so quickly that another ballot could be held within a few weeks, and that an art union was being organised to assist the fund further.
