STRONGER NAVY

BRITAIN’S INCREASING STRENGTH PLAN TO SAFEGUARD TRADE ROUTES (British Official Wireless) RUGBY, May 25. (Received May 26, at 5.5 p.m.) “ A strong navy is vital to our safety, and our navy is becoming stronger every day. At this moment we are building 562,000 tons of warships,” said Mr Geoffrey Shakespeare, Parliamentary Secretary to the Admiralty, speaking at a Royal Empire Society function at Liverpool.

Mr Shakespeare said that the main features of the Admiralty’s plan to safeguard the trade routes were special naval convoys for the main routes, the conversion of some ships into anti-aircraft vessels, the provision of a new type known as an escort vessel, and the strengthening of the navy.
