A SMART ARREST
BURGLARIES AT HASTINGS TWO YOUTHS APPREHENDED (Per United Press Association) HASTINGS. May 28. Particularly smart work was performed by a night watchman and members of the Hastings police last night, and resulted in the identifying of two juveniles from Napier as the alleged perpetrators of two burglaries committed earlier in the evening in the main business area of Hastings. The premises entered were those of Hallenstein Bros, (mercers) and Madame Cowan (gown shop), in Heretaunga street. The discovery by a night watchman of an open door aroused suspicion, and gave cause for alarm to the police. The night watchman was informed by two girls that two youths had been seen carrying a suitcase and overcoats as they left the right-of-way leading to Hallenstein Bros.’ premises. He hailed a taxi and conducted a search that eventually led him to a boarding house, Meantime, Constable R. Bradley and the detective force were also engaged in the search. They were successful in locating the missing goods, which had been hidden in conveniences. An entry was made into each shop by breaking a rear, window, and in Hallensteins’ shop several overcoats, together with a suitcase of assorted clothing, which they had packed, were taken. The haul from Madame Cowan’s premises comnrised about £8 or £lO in cash. It is understood that all the missing goods and cash were recovered. As the two apprehended are juveniles, whose homes are in Napier, they will be dealt with in the Juvenile Court, probably in Napier. w
