The disregard shown for authorised pedestrian crossings in Christchurch | by many motorists and cyclists roused caustic comment from a North Island visitor recently. He expressed surprise at the great number of motorists and cyclists who passed over the crossings, ignoring pedestrians on them completely. Crossing the Square was a much more difficult passage than crossing the narrow Wellington streets or the busy Auckland thoroughfares, he said, in spite of the safety zones and marked crossings. Breaches of the regulations did not seem to be regarded as seriously as they were in the North Island, where prosecutions were frequent.
