Municipal Elections The official count in connection with the mayoral contest reveals that the sitting Mayor (Mr R. F. Batchelor) was returned with a majority of 67. The poll was the heaviest in a local body election in Lawrence for many years. No fewer than 89.5 per cent, of the electors recorded their votes. Borough Council On Wednesday evening the statutory meeting of the Lawrence Borough Council was held, the Mayor (Mr R. F. Batchelor) and Crs G. H. Martin. H. E. Pitt, J. Colgan, F. Gray, J. M. Barr and R. J. Forbes being duly installed. Cr G. H Martin was appointed Deputy Mayor. The following committees were elected.—Finance, Town Hall and Lighting: Crs G. H. Martin (chairman), J. Colgan and J. M. Barr. Works, Cemetery and Reserves: Crs H. E. Pitt (chairman),. G. H. Martin and R. J. Forbes. Waterworks, Sanitation and Baths: Crs J. Colgan (chairman), F. Gray and H. E. Pitt. On the motion of the Mayor it was resolved to place on recorjj appreciation of the services rendered to the borough by two retiring councillors, Cr G. R. Talboys, over- a period of 18 years, and Cr R. T. Gray, over the last four years. Rugby Football The draw for the fifth, series of matches under the jurisdiction of the South Tuapeka Sub-Union to be played on Saturday is as follows:—Tuapeka Mouth v. Lawrence, at Tuapeka-Mouth (Mr H. Hollands); Beaumont v. Waitahuna, at Waitahuna (Mr J. Pearson); Lawrence-Beaumont juniors combined v. Tuapeka Mouth, at Tuapeka Mouth. Hockey In the second round of the South Otago Ladies’ Association Shield competition Milton A beat Lawrence by 5 goals to nil. Warden’s Court At a sitting of the Warden’s Court at Lawrence Mr H. J. Dixon, S.M., granted an application by John Ryan for a gold prospecting licence over 80 acres of Crown lands in block X, Waitahuna district. Wesley Bicentenary The 200th anniversary of the conversion of John Wesley will be commemorated in the local Methodist Church bn Sunday by special services. These will be followed by a social next Monday evening, when an address will be delivered by the Rev. T. Skuse, of Dunedin. Rugby Football Challenge Cup The executive of the South Tuapeka Rugby Union has decided on the following conditions for the silver challenge cup presented to the union by Mr Simon Wright, of Balclutha, and which will be known as the Simon Wright Cup:— The cup shall be retained by the holders until won from them. Clubs wishing to challenge shall give five clear days’ written notice and the subsequent sub-union flag match will be deemed a cup challenge match. The team holding the cup at the end of the season shall be entitled to have its name engraved thereon.
