SMALL FAMILIES

THREAT TO THE RACE INCREASED BIRTH RATE NEEDED (Per United Press Association) AUCKLAND. May 19. A grave view of the shrinkage of the birth rate was taken by the delegates to the Farmers’ Conference, which unanimously adopted a remit urging that wages and salaries be based on the requirements of a man and his wife only, and that an adequate amount be paid by the State for the maintenance of each child.

It was stated that in 1870 the average size of families was 5.5; in 1936 it was 1.8; also that, actuarially, an average family of over three was required for continuance of the race.

“The State pays 15s a week for children boarded out,” said Mr Sexton, M.P. “Surely a similar amount should be paid to parents for the upkeep of their own children.”
