THE OTAGO LAND BOARD
TO THE EDITOR Sir,—A mistake occurred in my yesr terday's letter, the word " unable " being used instead of "able." The sentence should read "It is a fact that the present Land Board will not allow, experienced farmers' sons and trained ,j farm workers who are able to obtain from stock firms the necessary financial backing to go to a ballot unless they are financially Strong enough to carry on without such aid." My point is that the present Land Board is turning down applicants whom stock firms trust and are prepared to back. Apparently this board desires only settlers who are financially independent of stock firms, forgetting that thousands of independent farmers in New Zealand to-day owe their start and success in life to the. assistance given in the past by these firms. The general opinion is that the calibre of the three ■ Labour members on the Land Board is not very high. Their chief qualification for the job appears to be that they are . keen Labour supporters.—l am, etc.. May 18. Farmer's Son.
