CANADIAN DEFENCE

CRITICISM OF POLICY DESCRIBED AS SPINELESS OTTAWA, May 14. (Received May 15, at 8.30 p.m.) In the House of Commons Mr Howard Green (Conservative, Vancouver) designated the defence policy as spineless, and urged Canada to borrow a fleet of 25 war vessels from England to guard British Columbia. “ Pacific defences are woefully inadequate. The militia are ill-equipped and lack training.” Mr Green urged Canada to take a stand as pledging full support to Britain and the whole Empire in the event of attack anywhere, instead of the Government mistakenly boasting of no commitments to Europe. A Social Credit member (Mr S. C. Johnson) denounced the theory that if Britain was at war Canada was likewise. He asked if the Canadians would want to go to war for the Ethiopians of Czechs? Any Canadian war venture must be by way of a vote by Parliament.
