THE EXPANSION PROGRAMME DELAY CAUSING CONCERN MOTIONS CALL FOR INQUIRY (British Official Wireless) (United Press Association) (By Electric Telegraph— Copyright) RUGBY, May 13. Concern regarding the progress with the Air Force expansion programme persisted after last night s debate in both Houses of Parliament and the tabling of a Labour motion calling for an inquiry. This was followed by the announcement that two further motions had been handed in. One, standing in the name of the Opposition Liberals, calls for the appointment of a select committee to investigate aircraft supply, anti-aircraft defence, and air raid precautions, and the other, which is backed by 16 Government supporters, including Mr Winston Churchill, welcomes the appointment of an independent committee of inquiry. GOVERNMENT FACES CRISIS REVOLT NOT UNLIKELY LONDON, May 14. (Received May 15, at 5.5 p.m.) The Daily Mail says: “Owing to the parliamentary feeling, Lord Swinton several days ago placed his resignation in the hands of Mr Chamberlain, who refused to accept it, but the Government faces a crisis more serious than after Mr Eden’s resignation. Mr Chamberlain’s advisers contend that the Government cannot agree to an air inquiry, which both Conservatives and Labour members demand, as it would delay Air Ministry work. However, if Mr Chamberlain refuses, over 100 Conservatives will be confronted with either abstaining from an important division or vpting' against the Government. Some believe that a revolt can be averted if Lord Swinton and Earl Winterton resign, necessitating far-reaching reconstruction of the Cabinet. Mr Chamberlain will consider the position over the week-end.” The Daily Herald construes the fact that Earl Baldwin had lunched with Mr Chamberlain at 10 Dowling street to Mr Chamberlain’s appeal for his predecessor’s assistance.
