ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS

Questions will not be answered unless accompanied by the name and address of correspondents.

J. M., Seacliff.—Your letter will be forwarded to the Department of Agriculture. The view expressed in it is not new. L. H., Port Chalmers. —Suggestions for improvements in aeroplanes and additional precautions for safer flying should be forwarded to the Director of Aviation, Wellington “Awatea.” Waikaia.— (1) The average speed of the Awatea on service is 20 knots. She has crossed the Tasman (Sydney-Auckland) in 2 days 10 hours 52 minutes, the average speed being 21.8 knots, and Sydney-Wellington in 2 days 9 hours 15 minutes. (2) The average sea speed of the Tamahine is 16 knots. Her record speed on the run between Wellington and Picton is not available in Dunedin. “ Inquiry," Balclutha.—The 18 days’ leave provided for in the Agricultural Workers’ Extension Order is to be given at the convenience of the employer, and if other days are given at Easter and Christmas those days may be counted as part of the term. In many cases holidays on farms are regarded as matters for mutual arrangement, the only mandatory condition being that the worker must have 18 days’ holiday on full pay during the year. “ Curious.” Warcpa.—lt is presumed that your question has reference to mortgages under the Mortgagors and Lessees Rehabilitation Act. The amount of mortgage finally settled under that Act docs not determine the solicitor’s costs. Where the amount of mortgage involved in the application is between £IOOO and £3OOO the preparation fee prescribed by the regulations is £5 ss, and the appearance fee is £4 4s for the first four hours and £1 Is for each additional hour. If the solicitor has to travel more than 20 miles the appearance fee is increased by 50 per cent. There are also certain disbursements to be added to these costs.
