TROTTING NOTES

By Sentinel

Supertax The mile and a-quartcr track record at Forbury Park is held by Supertax at 2min 38 4-ssoc.

Supporting the Judge Some doubt was expressed about Iraq being enl tlod to second place in the Farewell Handicap, but those in a fair line to express an opinion agreed with the judge.

California California, the sire of Frisco Lady’s grand dam. was imported from America by Mr J. A. Buckland to sire trotters, but he was converted into a pacer Grade Fields Reta Peter, the dam of Gracie Fields, has a record of 4min 29 l-ssec. She won the New Zealand Trotting Cup in 4min 30 2-ssec and got the verdict in another in 4min 29 l-ssec

The Forbury System The Forbury Park system of splitting a poo] on the totalisator was a subject of discussion last week and will be a matter for consideration by the stewards next season. Philario

The Jack Potts gelding Philario won the Royal Handicap from 4min 45sec in 4min 23 2-ssec. His dam. Flossie Harvester, was got by Sonoma Harvester from Flossie Dillon, by Harold Dillon from a mare by Mauritius. A Track Record When Donor ran second in the Southland Handicap and put up 3min 13 4-ssec he put up a track record. The winning record is 3min 16 2-ssec, put up by Iraq in November of last season. Totalisator Returns

Last season the Forbury Park winter meeting was held on a Wednesday (Coronation Day) and a Saturday. The totalisator registered £57,527 10s. At the winter meeting of 1936, held in bad weather, the totalisator registered £31.220 10s. This year the total amounted to £43,241 10s. A Good Surface

The clay surface on the inside of the Forbury Park track has greatly improved the going, and not only gives a good foothold but provides faster going than the former surface. The rest of the track will be stripped and top-dressed with the same material. Three Bells Three Bells made amends for his defeat on the first day at Forbury Park by winning the Pacific Handicap from 2min 18sec in 2min 9 2-ssec. He behaved better at the start and evidently settled down as a result of his race on the first day. Too Slow

When pondering over future programmes the Forbury Park stewards should consider the advisability of tightening the class attached to the mile races in order to prevent unweildy fields forming two rows of horses on the same handicap. Either that or convert them into saddle races. Token

The Travis Axworthy gelding Token, who won in 3min 17 2-ssec at Forbury Park, was produced by Logan Mary, a mare by Logan PointerRosemary, by Franz —Pansywood, by Wildwood—Pansy Bee, by Berlin. Token set such a solid pace that Donor had to step 3min 13 4-sscc to get near him at the finish. Donor

Token beat a good pacer in Donor when they met in the Southland Handicap. Donor was giving away 48 yards and proved the merit of Token’s performance by going a track record of 3min 13 4-ssec, and winning in 3min 0 4-ssec or the equivalent for a mile and a-half. A Bad Run

Cantata was badly boxed in the James Memorial Handicap until about two furlongs from home when racing on the rails with Morello on the outside. Morello broke, and Cantata then made a dash, but it was too late an effort to reach the dead-heaters. Ginger Jack and Rocks Ahead.

Ginger Jack Ginger Jack finished in the Ritchie Memorial Handicap as if he had trained off a bit as a result of his exertions at the Interdominion meeting, but he came to light again, and made a dead-heat with Rocks Ahead. They were, however, perhaps lucky to finish in front of Cantata or Morello, who went to a break when a little over two furlongs from home. Frisco Lady

Frisco Lady, who won the Farewell Handicap in brilliant style, was got by Jack Potts from Daisy Pointer, by Logan Pointer Dayspring. by California—Daybreak. by Vancleve. She traces to the imported mare Grade, whose grand-dam was got by Glencoe, the sire of Stockwell’s dam The Stockwell line is now on top amongst the sires in England. Against Time

The Australian champion Lawn Derby is to attack the mile record at Harold Park on May 16 (states a recent exchange). The record is at present held by Walla Walla, who registered 2min 2 2-ssec on the same course in May, 1933. It is understood that should Lawn Derby succeed in establishing new figures for the distance a special prize will be given to his owner (Mr J. F. Mac Kenny) The Harold Park track is to be specially prepared, and the son of Robert Derby will be assisted by two pacemakers. When Walla Walla made the record he bad the assistance of a pacer and a galloping pony for the first two furlongs, and over the last two furlongs had another pacer. W. J. O’Shea, who will drive Lawn Derby in the trial, does not favour a galloper.

“ Lawn Derby is a peculiar horse,’’ said O'Shea, ‘‘and he may nut do his best if aided by a galloper. I intend to have two horses in sulkies, one to carry him along the first half mile, and the other to bring him home over the last four furlongs.” O’Shea added that Lawn Derby would make the attempt on the record unhoppled, Lawn Derby holds the mile Sydney Show Ground record of 2min 3 l-ssec. Last January in Melbourne he recorded 3min for a mile and ahalf, and a few weeks later did 4min 17 2-ssec for two miles at Auckland. Recently at Harold Park he registered 3min 16 l-ssec for a mile and a-half, clipping 4-ssec off Walla Walla's race record. The Australasian mile record against time is held by Indianapolis, who recorded 2min 0 2-ssec at Addington. SOUTH CANTERBURY REHANDICAPS (Per United Press Association) TIMARU, May 15.
