TROTTING AT FORBURY PARK

WINTER MEETING CONCLUDED

DEAD-HEAT IN PRINCIPAL EVENT

ROCKS AHEAD AND GINGER JACK

FRISCO LADY WINS THE SPRINT

The Forbury Park Trotting Club concluded its winter meeting and the season’s operations on Saturday in fine but dull weather. The final card of the season attracted a' large attendance, and proved the basis of veryinteresting racing and close finishes, and altogether an enjoyable day’s sport. The track provided excellent going, and this, in conjunction with the absence of any wind, contributed to some fast times being recorded. In fact, after making allowance for a somewhat heavy atmosphere, there seems no doubt that the Forbury Park track is now faster than at any time in its history.. This is no doubt due to the new clay surface on the inside half of the track.

good four lengths out in front. Down the back the leaders were the same, with the exception that Blue Logan had displaced Bon Chance in fourth place. Blue Logan made a forward move in the back stretch, and Kilmorick bi-oke. Coming round the top, Premier was just ahead of Blue Logan, but as they straightened for home Blue Logan came on with a good burst ol speed and. catching the leader, went on to win by three lengths from Premier, who was two lengths ahead of Jenny’s Guv, Bon Chance was fourth. Jock McGrath, Traveltone and Axiom broke at the start of the Tahuna Handicap. Premier led the way to Kilmorick, Churlelgh and Bon Chance, and with a lap to go Blue Logan had joined the leaders. Blue Logan proved the best in the last quarter of a mils, during which Jenny’s Guy and Bon Chance were inclined to mix in the run home. Shadeland never got amongst those that looked dangerous. Jackaranda and Donor, with Cyrano next best, carried most confidence in the Southland Handicap. Jackaranda made a poor show, and Cyrano faded out. Token made all the running, and without being driven out stalled oft Donor and beaf him by oyer a length. Donor ran a good race and out up a track record to get second. Civic began best in the Pacific Handicap. and Three Bells also began well, and they led Eastern Prince, Voloma. Marlene, Whitstone and Snowy de Oro past the stand. Three Bells went up to Civic at the far turn, and they led Voloma round the top and into the straight. Three Bells kept clear and beat Voloma by over a length. Embark began from the second row at the start and failed to show up in the race. Cantata started favourite in a good betting race on the James Memorial Handicap. Cantata was slow away, and when the field packed up got into a bad position on the rails, with Morello racing on the outside of her. Carver Doone and Renown’s Best carried on the running from Southern Smile, with the rest of the field close up, with Ginger Jack and Cloudy Range bringing up the rear. After rounding the far turn Cantata was endeavouring to get an opening, and Morello broke up badly Carver Doone led into the straight from Renown’s Best, with Rocks Ahead and Ginger Jack coming on, A good finish resulted in the judge being unable to separate Ginger Jadk and Rocks Ahead. Cantata came fast in the straight, and finished three lengths away, with Carver Doone and Renown’s Best next. Cantata was unlucky in getting boxed, and Morello was travelling like a possible winner when she apparently broke through interference. Ginger Jack was a bit unlucky in breaking in the early part of the race. Donor, after his previous form, was backed as a certainty in the Railway Handicap, and he won easing up at the finish.

Rollalong broke up badly at the start and Cyrano showed out first of the rest. Coming down’ the straight for the first time, Token ran' into the lead just ahead of Cyrano, with Oasis and Mohican next. The order was unchanged along the back, and at the end of a lap the field was racing in single file with Token still well clear Rollalong made a fast forward move in the back stertch and so did Jackaranda, but as they raced past the stand again the order was still Token, Oasis, Cyrano, and Seascape. Donor moved up fast on the outside racing along the back, but at the far turn and as they headed for home Token still had charge from Oasis, with Donor next. In the run home Token stayed on to win by a length from Donor, who got up to beat Oasis by half a length. Seascape was foutth. Times: 3min 17 2-ssec. 3min 13 4-ssec, 3min 18sec. PACIFIC HANDICAP. Sagamore, Sonoma King, and Grade Fields were three well-backed horses in the Peninsula Handicap. Axiom made the pace to the straight, but broke ’ when challenged by Gracie Fields, who came on to win from Parrish Chimes and Bosun. Sagamore again went to a break. Sonoma King lost ground at the start, but was well placed with a lap to go, but the effort to get there left her with a weak finirh;

Harold Wrack and Lord Wrack gave trouble at the start, and after some delay Civic and Three Bells got away at the head of a bunched field. At the half-mile post Recall and Invadere were still in charge from Silkwood. Turaki, Wynwood. and Ardmayle. with Soliad well back. Silkwood received a good run on the rails and led into the straight from Wynwood, Ardmayle. Turaki, Invadere, and Soliad. The Ashburton County Racing Club had ideal weather for the autumn meeting. There was some very interesting sport, with several head finishes. In the Longbeach Hurdles. Hunting Bag and Sir Rosenor were the early leaders. Sir Rosenor look charge after two furlongs, leading Grampian and Hunting Bag past the mile post, with Courtyard and Hauihowlme next. Chile lost his rider at the next hurdle. Hunting Bag led Grampian to the straight, where The Surgeon came along with a good run to win by a length while Courtyard put in a late dash to beat Grampian on the post. Hunting *ag was over a length further bacic, tiring in the last few strides. The burgeon is a useful sort on his day though ho is not consistent. Glenacre. Silver Slipper, and Steel Clear were slow to move in the Eilteilon Hack Handicap, while Irish Birdcatcher lost his rider soon after the start. Nightcalm was first to show out, soon having Lady Leigh, Nolana, Cocksure, Parakino, and Passenger in close attendance. They ran like this to the straight, where Lady Leigh shot out. Cocksure challenged in the Imal furlong, but Lady Leigh beat him easily by half a length. Nightcalm was a length away, and should be improved by the race. Great Memory was next, iust in front of Sheeny. Thermidor Parakino, and Gay Lyric.. The winner has now scored three times on end, and is on the way to good class next season if she remains sound. Cocksure finished well and his turn is nearly due again. „ , . , It was a surprise to find so few horses in the Selma Trot Handicap, two scratchings leaving only five starters. O. E. Hooper returned after the first day at Forbury Park . to drive Privateer. who led all the way and won easily. Rerekohu followed him early, but Tonioro was in second place at the mile post, only to break badly hall a mile from home. Quest then went after Privateer, but never looked like catching him. Rerekohu faced to a poor third. „ . The Ashburton Cup was . great surprise, won by Wine Card, the qutsiaer of the field, but her owner-trainer. J B. Pearson, came in for a hearty reception. Phalanx led out from Double Gift and Happy Night, while along the back Wine Card, Rebel Lad, Studley Royal, and Silver Ring were next, with Davolo moving up, after he. Mungatoon. and Last Refrain had gone off slowly. Studley Royal lost his place at the five furlong post, but moved up again at the home turn, where Mungatoon also put in an appearance. Phalanx and Rebel Lad led to the straight, but Phalanx was tiring. Wine Card then shot through, beating Rebel Lad easily. Studley Royal was going well in third place, ‘ but Willie Win came with a strong run to cut him out of third place on the post. Davolo, Mungatoon, and Happy Night were next. Silver Ring faded out. The winner had no previous claims to notice as a stayer in this class. Rebel Lad went well, and his turn is due at any time. Studlev Royal disappointed, while Davolo was handicapped by getting out badly, Willie Win showed improvement, and should win soon. . Nightmarch was in the limelight in the Trial Stakes, three of his progeny filling the places Mazzamarsh soon took charge from Night Hawk and Merry March* who was followed round the turn by a bunch, in which Improvident and Gay Parade were prominent. There was not much change to the straight, where Night Hawk shot to the front. Merry March finished with a strong run but failed by half a length. Mazzamarch. though tiring, hung on to be third, followed by The Wrecker. Then came Every Port, whose performance was very good, as she was chopped out at the start. Night Hawk had shown useful form on two previous occasions and he may stay. He was purchased before the race by Mr D. McFarlane, who formerly raced Knockfin, but Mrs J. Campbell, who bred the colt, will continue to tram him. . . , , Several of the starters assisted to hold up the Fairfield Hack Handicap. Eventually Stealamarch was chopped out, while Rangemore, Patuma and Great Bramble were slow to move. Windward and Settlement set the pace from Dividend, with Wagner, Bright Prospect. Emmeline Girl and Rabble following them to the straight. Wagner then moved up and he looked a winner when he took the lead a furlong from home Then Rabble put in a run, getting up to the post to win by a head. Settlement was two lengths away, followed by Great Bramble, who came home fast, just in front of Bright Prospect. The whiner finished resolutely and seems to relish a long straight. _ , . _ . When Wharrum won the Rakaia Irot Handicap, he gave O E. Hooper his second success of the day. It was a good performance, after the horse had dropped back to last, through a bad break. Four Square and Wax Vestas were the early leaders, but Wharrum ran to the front after five furlongs—the whole field being bunched at this stage. Two furlongs further on Wharrum broke, going back to last, while Four Square was interfered with. Llewellyn’s Pet then look charge, leading Cheledon and Wee Potts to the straight. Wharrum. coming on with a fast run. mowed the field down, beating Llewellyn’s Pet on the post. Kins Potts. Wax Vestas and Woe Potts were close up. There was anolhei exciting finisn for first place in the Flying Handicap. Grey Honour showed in front early from Great Star and Paper Slipper, with Pelmet and Swordstick heading the others Lazybones, a trifle slow to begin, ran up to second place after two furlongs, while Ponty also appeared. following the leaders round the home turn. Great Star took charge when the straight was reached, having Ponty in third place behind the two leaders, with Paper Slipper next Lazybones gradually overhauled Grey Honour getting up on the post to snatch a head victory. Ponty was over a length away, a similar distance in front of Paper Slipper, with Swordstick and Waitaka next. Lazybones did his early racing for Mr G. R Macdonald. when trained by Cutts brothers at Riccarton. After a good performance in the Templeton Handicap at Riccarton he was sold to the owner of Rebel Mate, joining F. Trilford’s stable at Washdyko. This was his first start in the new colours and he looks like doing well next season. NOTES ON THE RACING ( Special to Daily Times) WANGANUI, May 14, Master Hector led throughout in the Hack and Hunters’ Steeplechase, and kept Even Money, Lady Callaghan, and Mozeltov at bay whenever they took him on. He was unable, however, to stall off the final challenge of Artful Dodger, who had been running in the rear most of the way. Artful Dodger had gone up to Master Hector at the second last fence, but he made a bad jump or ho would have been able to win more easily. All Spirit Cell at the first fence and brought down Power Chief. , _. , Cometarium, favourite for the Trial Handicap, was too Jar back in the early stages to hold a winning chance, but he came fast over the last bit to head Jacynth for second. Ranting Mint had an easy win. She held a prominent position all the way in behind Merry Ruler and Irish Orders, and, taking sole charge into the straight, nothing had any chance. Jacynth, well up all the way, just had second snatched from her, and there was a bunched lot close up, including Raceline, Koura Kua, Whistle Pinkie, and Trilitha. Showing a striking improvement in form, Iddo scored a decisive win in the May Hurdles. Beau Gallante made the running, but Iddo joined him a mile from home, and they put a break on the others. Beau Gallante was done entering the straight, where Uegorrah had moved up from the rear. He had no chance, however, with Iddo. Aurora s Love, Donegal, and Silk Sox were handy, but they never looked like winners, Donegal being beaten five or six furlongs from home. The time was very fast, and he would have had to be at the very top of his form. Purolo made no race of the River Hack Handicap over the concluding stages She was always well placed on the rail in behind the leaders, Thala and Fafner. others handy being Happy Landing. Conveyor, Gay Hunting, and Perfect Idea Puroto moved up and joined Thala on the half, and, running for the straight, she drew well clear. The race was over so far as the winner was concerned, but there was a keen struggle for second, Galteemore and Conveyor just heading Thala on the post. Then came Happy Landing Perfect Idea, Fafner. and Amatory. Poroto has made great improvement recently, and nothing had a chance with her. Giving a brilliant display over the fences. Clarion Call always held the upper hand in the Wanganui Steeplechase At various stages. Riotous. Bngadorc. and Arctic Star tried him ouh but they were never able to cause him any anxiety. Arctic Star made the last dash at the winner, and had he not developed leg trouble he would have more seriously tried the winner. As it was. Clarion Call won handily, while Arctic Star lost second to the stronger-finishing Brigadore, Riotous dropped out of the contest over the last mile, and the other two wore both pulled up. Royal Limond running off the brush by the half the last lime. He was taken back to complete the course. Gaily, favourite for the Empire Handicap. endeavoured to repeat her firstday’s tactics, but she had been gathered on the turn by Brazen King, who received a nice run up on the rails from fourth place. He then went on to win very comfortably. Gaily weakened to fourth, being headed off by Slippery and Catalogue. The lastnamed lost a good deal of ground at the start, and while he may not actually have won. he would certainly have been second. Great Hope, who drew No. 1. was a warm favourite for the open sprint, but was narrowly beaten by Alunga Orate Debham and Bodyline cut out the pace from Great Hope. Notium. and Alunga together. Great Hope lost his position round the turn, but he was presented with a splendid run through on the rails as the leaders raced wide into line. He was unable, however, to head off Allunga, who scored nicely. Bodyline and Orate were handy, with Johnny Walls next. Alunga is now racing very solidly.
