HARRIERS

WEEK-END RUNS UNIVERSITY CLUB The University pack, leaving the St. Kilcla bathing pavilion, ran down Lovers’ lane to St. Clair and back along the beach to Tomahawk, after which the pack crossed the peninsula to the waterfront road and maintained a fast pace until it reached Queen's drive, where a handicap run home was arranged. CIVIL SERVICE CLUB The Civil Service Harriers held their annual one-mile Postal Cup race during the spell at the Rugby football match at Carisbrook on Saturday. The ground was in good order, and conditions overhead were ideal. A field of 35 faced Mr McKenzie, the starter. A feature of the race was the success of the back-markers, it being some years ago since a finish was decided by them. From the gun the limit men at 160 yards sot a fast pace, and passing the stand for the first time Walker Richards and Brown had taken charge of the field. The half-mile stage saw the field closing up. with Walker well out in front from Mason. Wilkinson, Richards and Campbell. In the third lap the back-markers began to show up, W. Mackinnon, N. Coutts. R. Whittlestone arid S. Asher going through the field in fine style. Geddes, the scratch man. was running easily some yards back. At the bend Walker was holding ori well and had a slight lead from N. Coutts. with W. Mackinnon, R. Whittlestone and S. Asher coming up fast. Passing the press stand for the last time Coutts took over from Walker, and S. Asher here came into the pictuve. moving up into third place. The leaders were racing now, and coming into the straight Coutts

had ia yard lead from Asher. This order was maintained up the straight, and provided the best finish seen for many years, Coutts holding his yard lead to gain the decision, with S. Asher second, the promising junior Walker third, W. Mackinnon fourth, and R. Wilkinson fifth. The scratch man, ' Geddes, finished well in ninth position. Time. 4min 35sec. Starting from the far end of Lovers’ lane, opposite Hancock Park, the course led up to Moreau street, down to Victoria road, finishing at the Scout Hall. A field of 12 runners faced the starter, Mr F. J. D. Rolfe. The runners got away at a fast pace, and the field was bunched until they came to Victoria road, where F. Mitchell and the three Thomson brothers held a slight advantage from K. G. Richdalc and R. Gilchrist. These runners were together until about 50 vards from the tape, when F. Mitchell won by inches, beating L. Thomson in the last fe\v strides. V. Thomson had a tussle with his elder brother. H. Thomson, and it was only by putting in a great burst of speed that he edged him out of third place. The official placings were: F. Mitchell 1, L. Thomson 2, V. Thomson 2, H. Thomson 4. The winner, F. Mitchell, is the new holder of the cup. The sealed handicap resulted in a win for V. Thomson, with F Mitchell second and J. HislOp third. About 15 other runners, under the whistle of Harrier Captain A. Marrett, had a run along to the Cemetery gates via Lovers’ lane, returning along the beach. A. Dourni was unfortunate in spraining his ankle. Prominent throughout the run were M. Murray. E. Darby and R S. Moody. slow jog to Tahuna Park, where a relay race was held from the top of Victoria road to Onslow House and back. The captain and deputy captain picked a team each, starting in pairs, to run about one mile. D. Bilson started with a lead of about 40yds from I. D. Craig, the latter winning by about a foot. Parton, and Grant. The slow pack, with Captain Woods in charge, set out from the school, and kept to a medium pace throughout the afternoon. Practically every member in this pack was in form, and all are beginning -to show results from attentive training The run home was short and fast, with Paterson, Baker, and Connor to the fore. The junior pack, under Acting Deputy Ryan, held a short run over the quarry to Ravensbourne, with Garrard, Sullivan, and Muir running well. The run home in this pack resulted in Clements, de Courcey. Haslem, and Shortall being in first. - CAVERSHAM CLUB Ideal conditions prevailed for the Caversham Harrier Club’s run from the George Street School, 52 turning out. Four packs were formed—the fast pack, led by Captain Colston, the second pack under J. H. Cummings, the junior with Deputy-captain Hebbard in charge, and the colts led by R Abernethy. From the school the trail led up the Pine Hill road to a point past Liberton, where a cross-country course was taken, The packs then picked their own course, all covering some good country in the Leith Valley region. The fast pack continued on to the Ross Creek Reservoir, which was circled

twice, and then down Woodhaugh to the school. J. Maddocks and S. I. George showing good form. The second pack came out on the Leith Valley road at Glenleith, and a run home was held from the Woodhaugh bridge, resulting in T. E. Taylor being first, A. J. Barr second, and A. Rackley third. The juniors’ run home was decided by a handicap run from the papermills (Hudson first, J. Fox second, L. M. Gerrie third). The colts had another keen run—B. Taylor first, W. McMillan second, J. Brown third. Next Saturday. at 2.30 p.m., the colts will have a Half-mile Race at St. Kilda before the Three-mile Presidents’ Race. DUNEDIN CLUB The Dunedin Harriers ran from Mornington School, a fair muster being present and Captain L. Hill leading the pack. Running down Kenmure road to Kaikorai Valley road they branched off and uphill through gorse and scrub. Then, upon reaching a road further up the hill, they bunched and made a fast pace down to the water race, along to the reservoir; then down to the Valley road again. Here the pack split up, and, with F. Poole leading, commenced the run home by way of Valley road and Kenmure road to the school, finishing with F.
