Saturday, May 14 (Before Mr J R. Bartholomew, S.M.) Drunkenness Leslie Helm, who pleaded guilty 1o a charge of drunkenness and of casting offensive matter in a public place, was fined 10s, in default 24 hours’ imprisonment, on the first charge; and 20s, in default 48 hours’ imprisonment, on the second charge Maintenance Default Fred Becconsall, who was represented by Mr H. S. Ross, appeared on a charge of failing to comply with the terms of a maintenance order, the arreas on which, to October 18. 1937, amounted to £l6 5s. —A remand to Christchurch on May 17 was granted. Young Women Charged Two young women, Mabel Davidson and Helen Margaret McPhun, the latter of whom was represented by Mr M. Hanan, pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing a crystal vase, valued at £3 ss, from a city store.—Chief Detective Young stated that the accused had been arrested on Friday evening. Subsequent inquiries showed that the accused Davidson was in possession of some other goods which it was alleged, had been stolen from at least six other shops, and ho asked for a remand until May 18 so that further investigations might be made.—-The remand was granted, bail being allowed in each case of the accused’s own recognisance of £25 and one surety of £25. An application for the suppression of the names in the meantime was refused.
