MAORI HILL’S CLOSE CALL NORTHERN PLAYS WELL Displaying its best form to date. Northern on Saturday went close to drawing with Maori Hill, one of the leading teams in the competition for the Fletcher Cup. The other leading team, Mosgiel, had a bye, and the remaining games of the series provided close finishes. The results were:— Maori Hill 2, Northern 1. Roslyn-Wakari 3, Technical nil. Old Boys 1, Caversham 1. Seacl'ff 1, Mornington nil. POSITIONS OF TEAMS The following table gives the positions of the teams in the Senior Divi-

Morninglon 3 MAORI HILL v. NORTHERN Maori Hill and Northern met at Logan Park under ideal conditions, the playing surface especially being in excellent order. The teams were:— Maori Hill.—Holden, Taylor. Bayne, Mills, Sutherland, Haldane, Wadsworth. Gilchrist, Henderson. Little. Balk. Northern.—Warren, Bennie. Anderson. Wallace, Buchanan. Sutherland, McLean, Young. Thompson, Bertinshaw, Reynolds. Keen play marked the opening. Hill, coming through with good passing, was held up when Henderson tackled the goal-keeper. Northern’s dash was troubling the opposition, and after a good run by the right-wing pair McLean’s cross gave Thompson an easy chance, from which he shot outside. Sutherland, Little, and Balk were playing well, but Warren, in goal, proved safe. Play again went to McLean, and the Northern right-wing centred strongly, another good chance being missed through the inside men failing to be up in position. Henderson’s swinging passes to his wings were effective, but Anderson and Bennie defended well, with Balk centring well, Bunching amongst the Northern forwards nullified their attacks, and. although the Hill team held the advantage, it could not score. Warren held a header from Henderson, and Holden at the other end returned play upfield. Little following with a perfect shot, which was deflected over by Warren, who also cleared well from the corner-kick. Buchanan, Bennie, and Anderson stood out in defence, but the inside play of Gilchrist was a danger, and when the latter placed for Wadsworth, the winger’s centre was received by Henderson, who scored a good goal. Maori Hill 1. Northern nil. Before the interval Northern pressed strongly. Young sending in a long shot which Holden deflected, and the spell ended without further score. For the second half, McLean and Thompson changed positions in the Northern front line, and in an early attack Holden dealt safely with Berlinshaw’s shot. In hard, even play, the defences of both sides proved :,ound. McLean, at centre-forward, improved Northern’s attack, and, sending play to Reynolds, the winger, shot nicely to goal, where Holden cleared. Displaying great speed when Bennie

repulsed a Hill movement, McLean slipped a nice ball to Reynolds, who, taking it on the run, beat Holden with a cross shot. Maori Hill 1. Northern I, At this stage Hill was fairly unsettled. and another attack from the left wing saw Thompson miss with an open goal. From a free kick for pushing, Northern netted direct from the kick, which, however, did not enhance its score. Sound work by Taylor and Sutherland gave Balk position, Warren safely dealing with a good drive. Little and Gilchrist played too much football, and Henderson received few chances to score. Northern, although handicapped by an injury to Young, and Thomson’s lack of condition, continued to harass the Hill defence. but when Taylor returned a shot from McLean, Sutherland smartly sent play to his forwards, Gilchrist finally receiving to place past Warren. Hill 2, Northern 1. The remaining eight minutes of play were keenly contested, McLean shooting past for Northern and Gilchrist with a good header struck the crossbar following a Hill attack. In a final rally by Northern, a header by Bertinshaw was safely held by Holden, and the game ended: Maori Hill 2 goals. Northern 1 goal Mr F. G. Smith was referee. CAVERSHAM v. HIGH SCHOOL OLD BOYS . At Tonga Park the much-improved Caversham side fought out a very fast game with High School Old Boys, and, after losing a man 15 minutes from time, proved to the many spectators what a very fit side it was. Play opened at a fast pace. School looked dangerous, but Reid relieved, and McSkimming, taking well down, had his cross headed clear by Familton. McNarey sent on to Groves and Cameron, the latter crossing nicely. A melee in front of Caversham’s goal resulted in Green being penalised, from which Groves scored. Old Boys 1. Caversham nil. Caversham immediately set up a hot attack on School’s goal. Smith clearing in fine style. A. Williams went close with a fine shot just on half time. On the resumption of play, Romeril burst through, but failed to pass to Gloves when well placed, and a strong clearance found Old Boys’ defence hard pressed. Caversham was swinging the ball about, and was making this type of game pay. the School being often caught out of position. McSkimming was dangerous, and his good crosses should have brought results, overeagerness spoiling many scoring movements. Eventually. W. Williams scored from close range. Caversham 1, Old Boys 1. Groves and Cameron, on School’s left, were playing good football, but without result. Williamson went through to test Green, a corner resulting. Caversham was lucky, the ball hitting the upright, and the team swept down the field again. Smith dealing safely with shots from Williams and Meiklejohn. At this stage, Caversham was on top. and Todd failed badly twice to put his team ahead after receiving right in front of goal. McNarey, who was playing strongly, sent upfield to Romeril. who burst through, but was brought, down, and G. Reid had to go off. Caversham kept up the speed it had set throughout and was able to keep its goal intact when the final whistle sounded with the result:— Old Boys 1 goal. Caversham 1 goal. Mr J. Sands was the referee. ROSLYN-WAKARI v. TECHNICAL Playing at Ellis Park, Roslyn kicked off, taking play to Clarke, Smythc placing fast. A long pass by O'Malley across Roslyn’s goal was missed by Freeman. Play was fairly even until Williams sent up to Stanton, who transferred to Rutherford, the latter beating Clarke. Roslyn 1, Technical nil. Off-side and wild kicking was nullifying Technical’s forward play, and miskicking by the backs gave Roslyn the advantage. McGregor made an attempt at scoring, Clarke making

a good save. Ramago repulsed a Technical attack, but Groves, with good play, returned, and Bennett cleared a shot from Howie. Roslyn forced two corners without success, and Groves, receiving from a clearance, tested Bennett with a long shot. The ball was cleared, Smythe sending through to Technical’s goal, where Clarke cleared a corner-kick. Howie and Chapman were prominent for Technical, but found Roslyn’s defence sound. Rutherford and Wilson combined well, the movement being repulsed with the Technical goalie returning a good shot from Wilson. A minute later the home forwards missed with an open goal, and the spell ended with the score unchanged. On resuming, Roslyn took play to Clarke, the goalie saving and sending play to O’Malley and Chapman. Bennett cleared the attack, Welham receiving to pass on to McGregor, who sent on to Ramsay, the latter’s shot striking the upright. Stanton missed from tbe rebound.._ Roslyn continued to press, poor shooting spoiling the efforts until Welham sent a through pass to Stanton, who beat the goalie for possession to score. Roslyn 2. Technical nil. Technical advanced on the left, Grant’s shot going astray. A further attack was repulsed by Nees. A free kick to Roslyn was cleared by Clarke, and from the ensuing corner Rutherford netted, Roslyn 3, Technical nil. Lacking cohesion in forward play, Technical was well held by the opposing half line, and Duerdon and Mowat, the Technical backs, were prominent on defence. Two break-aways by Technical were without avail, and the game ended: Roslyn-Wakari .. .. 3 goals Technical Old Boys .. Nil Mr F. Stanley was the referee. SEACLIFF v.
