A.R.P. IN THE PORT OF LONDON Tho Port of London Authority, In close cooperation with the Air Raid Precautions Department of the Homo Office, has drawn up a comprehensive air raid precautions scheme for safeguarding the personnel at the docks and up-town offices and warehouses and for reducing to a minimum the dislocation which might be caused by hostile air attack. The Authority’s scheme, which is designed to ensure, as far as possible, the minimum Interruption to the handling and distribution of Imported goods and materials during war time, provides for protective measures at vital points In the five dock systems In the port and for certain safeguards for ships In the docks and river. Numerous splinter-proof and gas-proof shelters for the army of clerical and manual workers at the docks are to be provided. Many of these workers must, however, remain at their posts during an air raid owing to the special nature of their duties, and provision has been made for flrst-aid treatment and the cleansing of personnel who may become gas contaminated. It 1s Intended that there shalj be a flrstald post and cleansing station within five minutes’ walk of any part of the docks. The Authority’s local flre-flghttng services are to be augmented to enable numerous simultaneous outbreaks to be dealt with should the occasion arise, and rescue parties and emergency repair gangs are to be organised and trained In the special duties that may be required of them. The personnel for the various air raid precaution services has been drawn from all grades of the Authority’s staff. All are volunteers, and It may be mentioned that when the first classes were being organised for the training of personnel in the decontamination methods some 200 dock labourers at once volunteered and came up to the city In their own time to receive Instruction. The Authority has secured the co-operation of ehtp owners and tenants within the docks, some of whom have prepared their own schemes, while others have sent volunteers from their staffs for training. The provision of emergency methods of communication, darkening arrangements and liaison with other authorities are other matters provided for In the scheme. NEW HOPPER DREDGE The new hopper dredge Kerlmoans, built for the Wellington Harbour Board at a cost of £24,000 sterling, left the Clyde on March 15 for New Zealand, via Suez, and Is expected to reach Wellington about the middle of next month. The Kcrlmoana was built by Ferguson Bros, at Glasgow, and Is a steel, self-pro-pelling, single-screw dredge, with hopper amidships. Her length, between perpendiculars, Is 104 feet, her moulded breadth 27 feet 6 inches, and her moulded depth. 10 feet. Her deadweight capacity In hoppers is 200 tons, and she will have a mean loaded draught of eight feet, with a speed of eight knots. Built under Lloyd’s special survey, the Kerlmoana is classed 100 A 1 for grab hopper dredgers. She has one coat-burning boiler, working at a pressure of 1401 b per 801 n, and the main engine is of the compound. Inverted, surface condensing typo. She Is fitted with electric lighting, and the dynamo Is driven by a special steam engine. The dredging crane Is of the Priestman universal grab type, and Is mounted on the foredcck. It is driven by steam supplied from the main boiler and exhausts to the condensers. Three different grabs for dealing with varying types of material are available, and the total grab load is six tons. Tho maximum radius of the jib Is 20 feet, and she has a dredging depth of 50 feet below water level. PORT SAINT JOHN ASHORE The new motor vessel Port Saint John, bound from New Plymouth to Gladstone, went ashore at Lady Elliot Island, Queensland, at 9 p.m. on May 4. An attempt was made to refloat the vessel soon after striking, but was unsuccessful. Another attempt was made again the following day, but was still unsuccessful. The small coastal steamer Canonbur was standing by. The Port Line, Ltd., made arrangements for the Queensland tug Carlock to leave at once for tho stranded vessel, also for the tug Heros to leave Sydney to render assistance. In the messages received In Sydney from Queensland no mention was made ns to what damage the Port Saint John suffered. Tho Port Saint John, which was only launched at Sunderland last October.
