DANCING INSTRUCTORS CONFER

TOWN HALL CHAMPIONSHIP RULES OF CONTEST To decide the rules to be ooserved for the 1938 Town Hall Dance Championship, a meeting of dancing instructors was held in Miss Wallace’s studio on Thursday. Mr J. Brown occupied the chair, and there were also present: Misses J. Abraham and M. Wallace and Messrs R. Brown. G. Cox, W. Robinson, and B, Duff. It was decided that the couples who would be chosen to compete in the final of the contest could not change their partners nor take part in any further heats without the consent of the Controlling Committee. To be eligible to compete in the final, it was agreed that couples would require to attend the Town Hall dance on 15 Saturday nights. The reason for this rule, it was mentioned, was to prevent strangers coming to Dunedin when the competition was nearing completion and qualifying for the final. The instructors decided that the dancing would be judged on # the correct basic steps, and the winners of the contest would be sent to Melbourne to represent the Town Hall dance at the Australasian Championship to be held at the end of the year.

In order to make the contest an open one. Mr W. Robinson and Miss B. Anderson, who are considered excellent ballroom dancers, signified their intention of not entering for the competition. Last year’s winners, Mr and Mrs Bert Duff, will not be eligible to compete again, and Mr V. McKane and Miss M. Marks, who filled third place last year, will not be competitors, as they are now residing in the north. Mr Brown mentioned at the conclusion of the meeting that the same judges would not adjudicate at all the preliminary heats.
