CLAY BIRD SHOOTING

lOUTH ISLAND CHAMPIONSHIP WON BY T. A. CLOUSTON Under the auspices of the. Dunedin Gun Club, the South Island clay bird championship was commenced yesterday in fine weather. The morning shoot was made a little difficult by a somewhat tricky cross wind, but this abated in the afternoon when conditions were wholly in favour of the competition. ' T. A. Clouston won the South Island championship, being the only entrant to score a possible of 21 birds. With the exception of the fifth, all these were secured with the first barrel. Clouston is a member of the Lauder Gun Club, and on two occasions, in 1933 and 1936, he won the Otago championship, and was once runner up in the South Island championship. In the 1933 Otago event he had a great tussle after a tie with E. P. Graham, who admitted defeat only after he had missed his seventy-third bird. Clouston also shot well in the morning handicap shoot, when he was one of eight runners-up to R. Baker, of Waimate. Baker broke all of his 21 birds, being forced to use his second barrel on three occasions. W. Brookes, C, C. Thompson. J. R. Roy. W. Weavers, R. Baker and I. G. Watkins all broke 20 birds in the championship, and had to shoot off to decide the position of runner-up. This was gained by Thompson, when Watkins, who was the last to be eliminated, missed his thirty-third bird. To-day’s events will consist of an open sweepstakes in the morning, and in the afternoon the South Island Skeet Championship will be held.
