Mrs McLean, of Pine Bush, Southland, was hostess at a morning tea party in the Savoy yesterday, when her guests included Mesdames D. Solomon, Charles V. Smith, Kenneth Graham, L. J. Black, L. E. Macassey, E. S. Solomon, W. N. Wood, and Misses Betty Macassey and Betty Bell.

•jf * * The May meeting of the Craigleith branch of the Home Economics Association was held at the home of Mrs Weir, president. A new member was welcomed. Keen interest was displayed in a practical demonstration by Mrs Fraser on the art of making rucked cushions.

At the May meeting of the Ravensbourne branch of the League of Mothers Miss Thelma Hudson (Timaru), who was welcomed by Mrs Cairney (president), gave a most interesting account of her stay in Germany, where she lived for several months. The vocal programmes' included items by the league choir, led by Mrs Newey, accompanist. The thought for the month was: “ Sunshine within more than compensates for its absence without.”

Prior to her departure for England on May 17. Mrs K. Greaves, of Mosgiel, entertained her fellow-members of the Taieri Ladies’ Bowling Club to afternoon tea at the Vedic Cafe. The tables were tastefully decorated,

autumn tints predominating. Mrs Greaves was the recipient of a beautiful bouquet and shoulder spray, and regret was expressed that the bowling club would be without the services of Mrs Greaves for the coming season. Among those present were Mesdames Greaves, Scott, Wilson, Roberts, Stratton, Paterson, Gibson, Woodward, and Turnbull. y. * * The monthly meeting of the psychology circle of the Otago Women’s Club was held in the small lounge on Wednesday last. The afternoon was a welcome home to Miss Mercer, who has been in Australia for some months. The subject for Consideration was/ “ Making and Breaking Habits,” and following the discussion. Miss Mercer entertained those present by telling of her experiences in Svdney and places of interest visited. Those present were: —Mesdames Alexander, Richdale. Stewart, P. Priest, P. L. Ritchie, Duncan. Tyson, Lee, McMillan. Smith, Wakefield Holmes. L. Rowe (Nelson), and Bridgman, and Misses V. Reynolds. Burgess. Lee, Lawrensort, Arlidge. Dallis. Brown, and Miss Mercer. * * * Mrs Richard Hudson, who is leaving shortly on a, visit to England, has been the guest of honour at a number of parties lately. On Tuesday Mrs R. Ellitt gave a mah-jongg afternoon at her home in Claremont street, when the guests included Mesdames J. R. Glendining, Brett (Auckland), Stuart Glendining. D. Smeaton Hunter-Wes-toh, and Jack Hudson: On Wednesday morning Mrs Ida Miles gave a tea party, and Miss Hazel Smith entertained friends in. the afternoon in Mrs Hudson’s honour. Yesterday Mrs A. A. Fairbairn gave a morning tea party at the Otago Women’s Club, wheen those present included Mesdames E. T Moller, Wakefield Holmes, Holmes (South Africa). Dora Smeaton. E Murray, and Miss Marion Fairbairn. Mrs Garth Gallaway gave a mah-iongg party in the afternoon, and Mrs Roland Fulton was hostess at another mah-jongg party in the evening.

Mrs Frank Jovvell, of Christchurch, is a guest at the City Hotel.

Mr and Mrs C. Herron (Te Anau) have returned home after spending their holidays in Oamaru as the guests of their parents, Mr and Mrs Rawson, Reed street, and Mr and Mrs Herron, Cape Wansbrow.

The annual ball of the Balclutha Plunket Society, held in the Britannia Theatre on Wednesday evening, was very well attended. Mr D. M. Henderson, on behalf of the local society, introduced the visitors —Mrs James Begg, of Dunedin (Dominion president), Mr and Mrs James Hogg and Mrs McGeorge (Otago president). The following debutants were presented to Mrs Begg by Mrs G. N. Bell (president of the local society):—Misses Joyce Hayward. Marjorie Davey, Joyce Miller, Alma Little Peggy Mowat, Nancy Willocks. Chnssie Barron, and also the three carnival queens—Misses Joan Throp (Plunket queen), Thelma Sinclair (Scottish queen), and Jean Gold (swimming queen). Miss Throp then presented the presiding ladies with bouquets. Mr A. R. Dreaver was master of ceremonies. The music was supplied by a local orchestra of five instruments.

Mrs Guy Sinclair gave a four-table bridge party at the Otago Women’s Club yesterday afternoon, in honour of her sister, Mrs H. Rattray, of Greymouth, who is at present her guest. Those presnt included Mesdames Leslie Wilson, Edgar Hazlett, F. E. Clapperton, Douglas Ramsay, Gerald Whitcombe, May, R. G. B. Sinclair, and Misses Cook, Galloway, Shand (2), Fleming, J. Haggitt, and Doris Ramsay.

* * ❖ On Monday last the Society of Women Musicians met in the Otago Women’s Club rooms. In the absence of the president (Miss Mary Martin) Mrg Raynor Bell occupied the chair. The occasion was the annual party of the society, and members spent an enjoyable evening playing trump whist, organised by Miss Stella Bayley, The highest score cards were held by Miss Irene Barth and Miss V. E. Thomson. Mrs Bell expressed thanks to Miss Bayley, to whose efforts the success of the party was largely due. Supper was served in the dining room.
