F. Jones, of Hastings, recently when visiting the Cook Islands. He mentioned to Hastings Rotarians the other day when addressing them upon his visit, that though the natives were exceptionally generous and everything they did was as though it was play, they were inclined to be rather cruel to animals, particularly the horses. They seldom trotted or cantered on horseback. It was always a wide gallop, he said, and they always tied up their animals, sometimes leaving them for long periods. “It is strange that they should do this for the reason that they are a particularly light-hearted and loving people.” he said.
