Mr James Begg was a passenger, en route for Wellington, by yesterday’s express.

Mr James Lobb, of Lawrence, left on a short visit to Auckland by the express yesterday morning. Mr J. H. Gilbert, general traffic manager of the Union Steam Ship Company, Ltd., is. at present on a visit to Dunedin.

Mr A. Campbell, M.P., left yesterday morning for Wellington, where he will attend a meeting of the Maori Advisory Board. A Press Association cable message from London states that Mrs Oscar Asche is affianced to Dr Chalmers Watson (retired).

Mr T. H. Toovey, Australian and New Zealand representative of the Port of London Authority, left by the express yesterday, en route for Wellington. A Press Association message from Wellington states that the Gazette announces that the appointment of Major-general J. E. Duigan as chief of the General Staff has been extended to March 31, 1939. Mr H. C. Watson, formerly groundsman at the Carisbrook Ground, and now of Eden Park, Auckland, is spending a short holiday in Dunedin. Mr Watson, who was an Otago representative cricketer, was also well known in Rugby football circles, mainly as a referee.

A Press Association cable message from London states that the following New Zealanders were presented at Court yesterday:—Misses Jean Batten, Noela Cable, April Hargreaves, M. Hutchison, Nita Reid, Nelle Scanlan, Norah Tipping, and Moira West.

A Press Association cablegram from New York states that Mr Charles Arthur Banks has received the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America’s gold medal for the “ application of aerial transportation to the development of remote mining regions ” in connection with New Guinea.

The Union Airways liner Kotuku left the Taieri airport at 8.15 yesterday morning for Christchurch, Blenheim and Palmerston North with Mr E. H. Burrell and Dr L. A. Bennett for Christchurch, Mr J. W. Crust and Miss F. Crust for Wellington, and Mrs L, H. Denniston, Messrs V. G. and C. J. Spain for Palmerston North. The inbound liner Karoro arrived at 2.45 p.m. from the north with Mr N. Mitchell, a through passenger from Auckland, and Messrs W. H. Bramner, S. Massetti, P. C. White, J. Spence Nichol and Dr Hand Newton from Christchurch.
