TROTTING AT FORBURY PARK

FIRST DAY OF WINTER MEETING MORELLO WINS PRINCIPAL EVENT FLYING HANDICAP TO WORTHY KING

The Forbury Park Trotting Club opened 'the winter and final meeting of the .season' in cold and dull weather, in the 1 presence of a fairly good but not large attendance. even for an off day. It was expected that the attractive card: wofild have met with a better response from the sporting public. The track provided excellent going, with a good'foothold and a still'atmosphere assisting in the compilation of fast times. The card provided some very interesting racing and close finishes, and altogether an enjoyable day’s racing during which some well-backed favourites failed to run up to the expectation of their supporters. .Kilmorick and Jock McGrath were the popular selections for the Bayfield Handicap, but both began badly. Shadeland at' once took. charge and, trotting a level ' gait, won all the way Bon Chance and Kilbirnie Dan were also handy to the winner without being capable of seriously jeopardising his chance. Gaynor made up a good deal of ground to get a place. Donor was backed for the Domain

little change in the order of the leaders as they raced through the -back stretch. Shadeland was first into the straight from Bon Chance, and in the run' home he won comfortably by a length. Gaynor was three-quarters of a length behind Bon Chance, and Swift Guy fourth. Then came Kilbirnie Dan, Jock McGrath and Chudleigh. Times: 3min 26 3-ssec. 3min 25 l-ssec, 3min 24 2-ssec.

Handicap as if the result had been decided. He soon hit the front and kept In charge for the balance of the jbur- * ney. Cyrano followed the favourite all the way, but in the final quartermile the latter shot away and won comfortably. Jackuranda and Rollalong were a bit slow away. Agility, Brigadier, Dark Hazard, Grand Finale and Red Pigeon were taken out of the Beach Handicap. Great Divide, Three Bells, Voloma and Snowy de Oro were carrying most support in a gßod betting race. Three Bells, on the rails, lost his chance, at the start,'and Harold Wrack and Civic began smartly and set a strong pace to Embark,' Credit Funds, Great Dvide and Marlene. The pace continued solid and turning for home Harold Wrack, Embark; and Great Divide were in charge. A good finish restilted in Great Divide just beating Embark and Marlene with Snowy de Oro close up fourth, and then came Civic and Credit Funds. Several of the field failed to get a run. A full card went out for the Ritchie Memorial Handicap, with Ginger Jack starting a much stronger fancy than Renown's Best, with Carver Doone next in demand, and there was also good support for Rocks Ahead and Morello. The field began well, and the pace was on all the way. Carver Doone. Ginger Jack, Morello and Renown’s Best all took part in the pacemaking, Renown’s Best. Ginger Jack and Morello turned for home in close order. Morello put in a very good run and had the race won half a furlong from home, where Ginger Jack was tiring. Carver Doone came again and beat Renown’s Best for second place. Ginger Jack was a close fourth, beating Rocks Ahead, 'who had been covering a good deal of ground on the efutside. Bill B. soon took charge In the Victory Handicap, but when it came to a finish he hung out and apparently caused interference between Glen Guy and Royal Grattan; Bayard made a good run on the outside. from well back and ran home a length in front of Bill B„ who had Eddie Tolan and Tritoma close up. Sagamore was made favourite for the St.’ Clair, Handicap in a field thinned out by the scratching Blue Logan, Jenny’s Guy, Kilmonck, Nannga, Princess Belverley, Sphinx and Silk Coat. Sagamore, however, gatfe his supporters a poor run for their money. When running in a handy position Sagamore went to a bad break and followed it'with others-. - v Native Huon carried the field along with the assistance of Axiom, Gracie Fields, Sonoma King and Parrish Chimes, wno were racing in close order, with the others out of it. Native Huon finally stalled off Sonoma King in a race oyer the final furlong and won by half a length. Gracie Fields was two lengths away third. Sagamore displayed a lot of pace in making up ground aftei his first break, but again went in the air.

Rollalong and Jackaranda lost ground at the start, and Cyrano and Oasis began well. The odds-on favourite went to the front as the field passed the stand with two furlongs covered, then coming Cyrano, Oasis, Shandon Chimes, and Mohican, the others strung out behind. Donor, Cyrano, and Oasis led along the back straight, and, passing the stand tor the final circuit Donor was pacing well in front of Cyrano, With Gay Avon, Oasis, and Shandon Chimes next. Gay Avon ran into, second place behind Donor going along the back, but entering the straight the favourite drew away and won easily by three lengths ’ from Cyrano, who was a length in front of Oasis. RACING NEWS

By Sentinel Answer to Correspondent “In Doubt.” Duntroon.—Pehoe did not start. Out

Sporting Song, who was shaping promisingly as a jumper, broke down a few days ago. At Timaru The nominations for the South Canterbury meeting total 365, as against 355 last year. An Opening

According to L. H. Hewitt, who has been a successful trainer in India for some years, there is an excellent opportunity there for riders who can go to scale at 7.10. Poor Horsemanship The low scale of weights at Egmont gave good jockeys few opportunities, and B. H. Morris was able to obtain only one mount in the two days. A premium was put on light-weight horsemen, and (says “The Watcher”) such was the scarcity of competent riders that more than one trainer scratched sooner than run, and several put up pounds overweight to get riders like Wilson. Broughton, and Wiggins. A Stayer A. Julian, who won the Grand National Hurdles on Tresham in 1903 and Morning in 1913, the Wellington Steeplechase on Haydn in 1907, the Great Northern Steeplechase on Loch Fyne in 1908, and the Great Northern Hurdles on Napper in 1913, is still schooling horses over jumps. A Record ,

At Aintree on Grand National Day the official double was picked only once, and Battleship (40 to 1), winner of the Grand National, and Bardadeche (100 to 8), winner of the Bickerstaffe Maiden Plate, returned a dividend of £5062 for 10s. This beats the previous record of £4679 established last year at Manchester. It is revealed that Lord Digby was the lucky punter. He was driving away from the course, little suspecting his luck, when the news reached him.

Santa Anita Handicap In the midst of Southern California’s greatest upheaval, the sporting fraternity of Western America staged the fourth Santa Anita Handicap, with £20,000 added. By superhuman effort, the race track at Arcadia, 20 miles from Los Angeles, was protected from the flood waters, and was artificially dried just before t he running of the great American handicap, which was of an international character, thoroughbreds having entered from France, Uruguay, Argentina, and Canada, while the ultimate winner, Stagehand, was the son of the English thoroughbred Sickle., Stagehand won the £20,000 handicap by a nose from Charles S. Howard’s Seabiscuit, the American handicap champion. Less than a fortnight previously the colt (belonging to Colonel Maxwell Howard, of Dayton, Ohio) captured the £IO,OOO Santa Anita Derby, and in two races amassed the staggering total of £26,760 in net earnings. Richard the Rich

A London writer, in referring to Richards’s earnings, stated some time ago that he was credited with the ambition to carry his banking account to £IOO,OOO, and, judging from the big retaining foes he can command and his earnings, that is no fanciful dream. The days of high retaining fees may be said to have started when Mr G. Baird made an engagement with Tom Cannon to ride for him for a period of three years for £6OOO, which sum, it was stated, was paid in advance. Mr Baird was also credited with having paid J. Watts £9OOO for three years’ call on his services. Lord Rosebery paid D. Maher £4OOO a year for several years for first call, and the sportsman who raced under the assumed name of “Mr Fairie ’’ paid £3OOO a year for second call on the American jockey Tod Sloan, who was credited with having received £SOOO a year for two successive years from Mr James White. It is stated that the largest sum the renowned Fred Archer received as a retainer from Lord Falmouth was £IOOO a year. Before Archer’s day it is on record that £IOO a year was all that Sir Joseph Hawley paid T. Wells, one of the leading horsemen of his day. for first call. It is not in retaining fees alone that matters have changed to the marked advantage of jockeys. H. Custance, a rider of note, stated that the only present Mr James Merry gave him during the three years he rode for the rich Scotsman was £IOO after winning the Derby on Thormanby. John Day, who steered the Duke of Grafton’s pair Dervise and Problem to victory in the Two Thousand Guineas and One Thousand Guineas respectively, was given a present of £2O, Privately Bred

Ajax, the star galloper in Australia at two and three years old. is included in the category of privatelybred champions. Ajax’s winnings arc several thousands sterling in excess of Limerick's winnings at a like stage, and it is therefore possible for Ajax to beat the son of Limond’s record. In considering matters as between Ajax and Limerick, it has to be remembered (says “ Phaeton ”) that the latter raced up to seven years old, which may not happen in the case of Ajax, for Limerick’s extended career was assisted by reason of his racing as a gelding. Again, the value of several of the important weight-for-age races at the present day is below what it was in Limerick’s time. During Limerick’s career he was called upon to contest 58 races. Will a like test be exacted from Ajax? Following is a list of leading winners privately bred in New Zealand and Australia: —

Rampion went into the sale ring as a yearling at a reseive of 1500 guineas, which was not reached, and once again the breeders had the satisfaction of retaining a colt who won a place among great winners. When Wolaroi was submitted at auction as a yearling 250 guineas was the moderate reserve. The black colt was unsold, and ms breeder enjoyed the full fruits of his successful career. TROTTING NOTES By Sentinel Centenary Derby Nominations for the Great Northern Centenary Trotting Derby, of £SOO, for present yearlings, close on May 30. Axiom Axiom behaved himself a lot better at Forbury Park than ho did at Oainaru. Interference When Bill B. commenced to tire inside the final furlong of the Victory Handicap he bore out and blocked Glen Guy, who then interfered with Royal Grattan. Non-Existent According to the times recorded on the first day at Forbury Park the slow class events cater for a horse that does not exist and could not make an existence unless on sustenance.

Fine Art Fine Art started favourite for the Renown Handicap, but did nothing right in the race. Unofficial The timekeepers missed the start of the St. Clair Handicap, and official time was not taken. A private watch made the time 3min 41 2-ssec. Both Missed Kilmorick and Jock McGrath were solidly backed for the Bayfield Handicap, but they both failed badly at the start. Frisco Lady Frisco Lady did not have her chance assisted in the Flying Handicap by mishaps to her gear, which held up the start and did not help to keep her in the right frame of mind to begin. Ginger Jack Ginger Jack did not please the critics when he appeared for the Ritchie Memorial Handicap. He ran a good race, but without any dash, and apparently he had trained off a bit as a result of his racing at the Interdominion meeting. Morcllo Morello, the winner of the Ritchie Memorial Handicap, put up a strong finish at the end of a solidly-run race. He was always on the scene, and won well at the finish. He is a Rey de Oro from Moonlit, by Great Audubon --Moonchild. by Rothschild. A Change in Going Morello went a much better race on top of the ground at Forbury Park than he did in the softish grass going at Oamaru. Rocks Ahead also shaped a lot better, but he had a bad run, as after waiting on the rails he had to be pulled out and race on the outside over the final circuit. A Speedy Finish

They went the first mile _of the Ritchie Memorial Handicap in 2mm 15 2-ssec. a mile and a-half in 3mm 20sec, and the full distance in 4mm 20 3-ssec. From Renown’s Best in front at the half mile to Morello winning the last half was covered in Imm 1 4-ssec. An Explanation

In connection with the running of Jackaranda in the Domain Handicap, the driver. C, S. Donald, was asked for an explanation. Proof was forthcoming that the horse’s connections had backed him for a considerable sum. Donald explained that the horse is only a three-year-old, and would have had to go round a big field. He waited for an opening, but could not get this, and when he went out on the outside he could do no better than what he did. The explanation was accepted. Slow Class

There was a consensus of opinion at Forbury Park that the class attached to the Beach Handicap is more likely to supply a congested and unweildy field rather than an interesting race. The class attached to the Bayfield Handicap is also considered slow, ana Donor won in 3min 20 4-ssec from a 3min 38sec mark in the Domain Handicap. Bayard There is not much of Bayard, the three-year-old by Frank Worthy from Bonny Logan, but he won the Victory Handicap like a racehorse, as he had to make up a lot of ground on the outside of the field over the final halfmile. Bayard’s dam. Bonny Logan, was got by Logan Pointer —Bonilene. A Busy Watch They were keeping the watch busy on the first day at Forbury Park. Shadeland won from 3min 44sec in 3min 26 3-ssec; Donor in 3min 20 4-ssec from 3min 38sec; Great Divide in 2min 8 2-ssec from 2min 18sec; Morello in 4min 20 3-ssec from 4mm 28sec; Bayard in 3min 2 3-ssec from 3min 16sec; Native Huon in 3min 41 2-ssec from 3min 56sec; Golden Moness in 4min 27 2-ssec from 4min 45,sec; and Worthy King in 2min 43 4-ssec from 2min 45sec. Donor Donor, the winner of the Domain Handicap, had no difficulty in stepping home in 3min 20 4-ssec from a 3mm 38sec mark. It seems safe to predict further honours for him. Donor was got by Jack Potts from Lady Bountiful, by Logan Pointer —Dollar Princess, by Rothschild—The Manageress, by The Manager—Miss Tracey, by Blackwood Abdallah from Jeannie Tracey, a mare followed in 1877 and the dam of Kentucky, General Tracey, and others that helped to enrich the Trotting Stud Book. Charade, who looked in great condition, led all the way to win the Century Hurdles, and always appeared to have it won. She set an easy but steady pace for a mile or so and over the last six furlongs she began to move along at a pace which gave most of her opponents trouble. Aurora’s Love stuck to her throughout, and after Iddo and Brigadore had made ineffectual attempts at getting the leader Riotous loomed up, but it was still left to Aurora's Love to challenge Charade in the run home. She had the winner under pressure but without hope of success. Riotous was a good third, with Brigadore handy. Royal Limoni, was never able to go the pace. The surprise of the race was the showing of Aurora's Love and Riotous, who had been inconspicuous in their earlier efforts. While beaten, Iddo and Brigadore ran good races. The latter should improve. , . , „ Count Willonyx, the winner of the Grand Stand Steeplechase, did not appear on the scene as a possibility until the last five furlongs. Up to that stage Don Erma. Arctic Star, Royal Fire and Forest Glow had all had a go at each other out in front and Forest Glow had taken the lead with a mile to go and was not displaced until the second last fence, when he was headed by Count Willonyx. At the last fence, however, Forest Glow was again on terms, with Royal Fire very close up and Arctic Star hanging on There was an exciting finish, Count Willonyx just heading off: Arctic Star, with Forest Glow and Royal Fire close up, and Don Erma not far away. Sporting Song was very sore and took no important part in the running. Arctic Star looked a bit unlucky and should be heard of again on the trip, especially over a longer journey. Gaily was favourite for the Connolly Handicap and she won decisively. She began well and occupied second berth to the pacemaker, Reipar, until the five furlongs, when she took sole charge. Passion Fruit, Reipar, and Brazen King were all under pressure behind her a long way from home and she eventually won handsomely from Passion Fruit, with Catalogue a good third. Then came Brazen King, Happy Landing, Reipar and Dutch Girl. Catalogue ran a patchy race, being well up early, drifting to the rear down the back, and coming again at the finish. Mittie, showing appreciation of the better going won the Winter Oats Handicap in fast time. She began best with Orate, Debham, Alunga, and Notium, and despite Grate’s efforts she kept the lead. Orate went with her to the straight, Debham getting chopped back on the turn, where Alunga was lying third, followed by Johnny Walls, Bodyline, Alloa and Notium. Orate dropped out as they turned for home and left Mittie well clear. Ridden out, she won by over two lengths, Johnny Walls holding off Alunga for second. Great Hope came from well back to get fourth, followed by Bodyline, Orate and Aureus. INQUIRY INTO CATALOGUE’S FORM (Special to Daily Times) WANGANUI, May 12. At the conclusion of the Connolly Handicap to-day an inquiry was instituted by the chief stipendiary steward, Mr C. Gomer, into the running of Catalogue, who eventually finished in third place. It was adiourned until after the last race and finally held over until Saturday morning. It is understood that the connections of the horse are not in any way involved, the inquiry being confined to the way he was handled by C. G. Goulsbro.
