ELECTION NOTICES OTICE TO ELECTORS. LADIES AND GENTLEMEN— In acceding to numerous requests from all parts of the district to offer myself as a candidate to represent the Otekaike Riding on the Waitaki County Council, and as a country member of the Oamaru Harbour Board, I should like to mention that I am a native of North Otago and have spent all my life in the district. As a farmer of 35 years' experience, I claim to have an intimate knowledge of the difficulties confronting the farmer and also his needs and requirements as regards roads and bridges and such other matters as come within the jurisdiction of the Waitaki County Council. What with the various forms of taxation now being levied, both for national and local purposes, I realise the burden that the ratepayers are being called upon to carry, and I consider that every consideration should be given to the ratepayers, and to see that the money collected from them is spent judiciously on essential works. I believe in progress and the development and improvement of the district and its facilities, but such progress must be within our means, and, while I shall support any measure to effect economies, such economies must not be false in their ultimate effect. I do not favour the erection of inadequate structures, such as some of the bridges which will shortly have to be rebuilt or largely reconstructed. Our policy should be based on a longer and more enduring view. I think the users of our roads who create the wear and tear upon them —i.e., motor and other traffic—should be called upon to pay a very large portion of the expense upon them. It is a sound principle that those for whom the modern roads are being constructed should pay the cost. In regard to the Harbour Board l favour a policy of maintaining efficiency, and such improvements found desirable, but here again I consider the interests of the ratepayers should be carefully studied. The present financial policy of building up a sinking fund that will ultimately extinguish the debt has my unqualified support, and we should do everything within reason to reduce the debt burI 'have had considerable experience in public matters in the Kurow district, and have at various times served on the following committees:—Kurow District High School (chairman), Upper Waitaki Farmers' Union (President), Waitaki Collie Dog Club (an ex-President); Upper, Waitaki Returned Soldiers' Association (ex-Pre-sident), Waitaki Foresters' Lodge (trustee), Kurow Presbyterian Church, Waitaki Dental Committee, Kurow Vigilance Committee. Upper Waitaki Football Club (Vice-President). Kurow Baths Committee, and Chairman of the Combined Schools Picnic Association. I am also a member of the Justices of the Peace Association. If you do me the honour of electing me as your representative, I sincerely promise to fulfil the confidence reposed in me. ._„.»*, T A. H CHAPMAN. Jun., . ' Kurow. TTOSPITAL BOARD ELECTIONS. I thank the ELe"cTORS of OAMARU for the confidence they have shown in me in the past three terms. I am keenly interested in the work and administration of the Board, and eaually so in the welfare of the WHOLE-of the staff and patients under the Board's care. I trust I may have the support of the electors in my desire to serve them for a further term. ELIZABETH FORRESTER, • (Mrs J. M. Forrester).
