COUNTY RATES
COLLECTION IN CLUTHA I PERCENTAGE BELOW EXPECTATION In a statement to the Clutha County Council at its meeting yesterday, the clerk (Mr A. K. Baxter) reported that the collection of the current year’s rates was not as good as expected, only 88 per cent, being collected. A much higher percentage had been expected. A great amount of arrears, however, could be collected, and endeavours, in this direction would be made during the present month. The collection of arrears. had been fairly good, the clerk continued, the respective years being as follows; 1933-34 £l4 18s sd; 1934-35, £349 12s 9d; 1935-36, £306 7s 2d; 1936-37, £1535 9s 7d;—total, £2206 8s od.. The accounts were quite buoyant, the clerk said, the county finishing with a credit balance of £4648 5s 3d, with a further £3995 in the Clydevale bridge loan account. £435 12s 3d in the county bridge loan account, and £43 8s 7d in the Kuriwao Gorge loan account. In addition £3OO still remained in fixed deposit, this being the balance of the £12,000 loan raised some years ago. Thus the total credit was £7892 18s Id. The council would, however, have some heavy expenditure in the incoming year, and would require all possible revenue to carry out its purposes. The following are the details of the rate collection in the various ridings for the year 1937-38 (shillings and pence excluded): —
