UNIVERSITY SWIMMERS

CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING J. C. DAVIES IN FINE FORM A NEW DOMINION JUNIOR RECORD Compared with former years, the standard of swimming at the Otago University Championships at the Municipal Baths last night revealed a vast improvement, and the large attendance, comprised mostly of supporters of the different faculties, was treated to some keen and exciting finishes. A varied programme was presented, and several members of the Kiwi Amateur Club gave their support to the meeting, which was efficiently controlled by members of the Otago Centre. The New Zealand University champion and Empire Games representative, J. C. Davies, was in excellent form last night, and broke his own Otago record for the Men’s 220 Yards Breaststroke by 1 2-ssec, his time for the distance being 3min 7 3-ssec. Davies was the only competitor in this event, and for that reason his performance is all the more meritorious. In this and in the exhibition which he gave in association with Miss Winnie Dunn, also an Empire Games representative, the University champion swam with an excellent glide throughout. Both swimmers were accorded an ovation at the conclusion of their exhibitions. P. F. Foote gave fine displays to win both the 100 and 220 Yards Championships, and also the 440 Yards Championship, in which he swam well away from his only opponent, S. Barclay, The five competitors in the diving events gave good displays, but J. H. Neville showed superior form. With some serious training, the swimmers selected to represent Otago University at the Dominion tournament at Easter should perform with credit, for the work of J. C. Davies, D. H. Symes, and P. F. Foote has resulted in raising the standard of swimming among the students. Perhaps the most popular achievement during the meeting was that of Miss Mary Stewart, of the Kiwi Club, the present New Zealand 50 yards junior girls* breaststroke champion, who lowered the record of 40 2-ssec. held by Miss C. Lynch, of Southland, for the 50 yards junior breaststroke. Miss Stewart, who has been training steadily for this attempt, covered the distance in 40sec.
