DREDGING OF THE MOLYNEUX

TO THE EDITOR Sir, —In connection with the controversy now going on between Mr J. Hislop and “Father Molyneux,” there is no doubt whatever in my mind—and I might safely say in the minds of most people in Balclutha and district, excepting a few of the “ diehards ’’ who for years have been obstructing the progress of this town —that the latter is correct in what he says. Anyone , who has lived here whilst the river was in flood surely will admit that a complete clearance of the willows near Barnego, the dredging of the old channel on that side, a straight, cut through the island below the chicory mill, will relieve the pressure on the bank from the hospital to the traffic bridge in time of an abnormal rise in (he river. Were this work carried out. it would, in my opinion at least, eliminate for all time the fear that has always existed —and does exist to-day —as to what could happen to Balclutha when the next big flood comes along.—l am, etc.. Common Sense. Balclutha.
