WAIKOUAITI BOROUGH COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Waikouaiti Borough Council was held on . Monday evening and was attended by the Mayor (Mr Andrew Fell), and Crs J. Cooper, J. V. McFie, A. Jenkins, W. R. McDougall, A. Y, Park, and R. M. Templeton. On the motion of the Mayor, the following resolution was carried: —“Thatin pursuance of section 39 of the Muni-, cipal Corporations Act, 1933, the Wai-j kouaiti Borough Council hereby resolves to fill the extraordinary vacancy; caused by the resignation of Cr William, H. Brown, by the appointment of, Thomas Hugh Logan Goodley to fill such vacancy.”—Mr Goodley tlien signed the statutory declaration, and took his seat as a councillor. The district employment officer, Department of Labour, Dunedin, wrote advising that approval had been given to the employment of eight registered and eligible married men for a period of five weeks on street widening work in the borough.—The letter was received, and the action of the Works Committee in finding work for the men approved. The Commissioner of Transport, Wellington, wrote advising that no change would be made this: year in, the system now in operation for the issue of motor drivers’ licences. —Received. The manager, State Fire Insurance Office. Dunedin, wrote stating that workers employed under scheme No. 13 would be covered under the council’s insurance policy, the additional premium payable on wages expended to be adjusted at next renewal date. —Received. J. F. Brown wrote asking for an entrance to his property in Beach street) and offering to do the work, provided that the council would supply the drain pipes and gravel required. He also asked for a water service to a new dwelling which he was about to erect.—Received, and both requests granted. Charles Hoad wrote asking for some repairs and gravel on Stonehaven street, adjoining his property.—The application was referred to the Works Committee, for, attention. With the view of improving the appearance of the roadway at the Soldiers’ Memorial, the council agreed to give £lO to the local branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association, the money to be expended in the construction of a rockery and other improvements. . . The Finance Committee submitted, a report showing that £llsO 6s had been collected in general and special rates for the current year, equivalent to 98.90 per cent: of 'the total rates levied, compared'with 98.813 per cent, at the same date last year. The whole of the rates for previous years had been collected, and after the, accounts for the current month had been paid, the credit balance at March 3! was estimated at £BOI 3s 2d, compared with £744 7s 4d at March 31, 1937—The report was adopted. . Accounts amounting to £ll2 4s 8a were passed for payment'
