CITY POLICE COURT

Thursday, March 10 (Before Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M.) TRAFFIC OFFENCES Stanley Joseph Milnes (Mr P. S. Anderson) was fined 20s and costs (10s) for failing td keep to his correct side of the road, and 5s and costs (10s) for driving without the prescribed lights. CHARGES AGAINST MOTORIST

Joseph Ernest Taylor (Mr P. S. Anderson) was charged with negligently driving a motor car in Cumberland street, failing to carry a warrant of fitness, and with failing to report an accident. He pleaded guilty to failing to carry a warrant of fitness and not guilty to the other two charges.—Sergeant Lean said that the charges were a result of a collision between a motor car and a bicycle at the intersection of Lower High street and Cumberland street on January 27.—Evidence was given for the prosecution by George Edward Winslaide, a telegraph messenger, the cyclist concerned in the collision, by Constable Watts, and Frederick Mulholland, Robert Francis McPherson, and Gordon Stanley Wilson (telegraph messengers).—Mr Anderson said that the evidence for the defence would show that of the two telegraph messengers who were approaching the intersection one decided to cut across the stream of traffic, while his companion preferred to wait for the traffic to pass. The failure of the first boy to exercise due care was submitted, responsible for the collision.—Evidence was given by the defendant, John Mann, a passenger in the defendant’s car, and Charles Henry Fortune, a newspaper reporter who saw the vehicles approaching the intersection and the events immediately following the impact.—The charge of negligent driving was dismissed. For failing t" 1 report an accident Taylor was convicted and fined 20s and costs (totalling 325), and for failing to produce a warrant of fitness he was fined 10s and costs (10s).
