TOO MUCH LEISURE

EXCESSIVE DRINKING AMONG MAORIS BISHOP BENNETT PERTURBED if (Per United Press Association) HASTINGS, Feb. 25. The 40-hour week and the legislation which has resulted in the creation of more leisure time were blamed by Bishop Bennett, Bishop of Aotearoa, for the aggravation of the evils of excessive drinking among Maoris. “ The thing which ought to be a boon to the Maoris has become a curse,” Bishop Bennett said in an interview. “ The effect of the extra amount of leisure on the drinking habits of the Maori people has been very serious. The Native people themselves are realising the harm that drink is doing to the race, and many leaders and chiefs are disturbed about it and anxious for the future. The trouble is that Maoris are gravitating to bars and spending the whole day in bars. In many cases they are squandering money which should go to support their wives and children.” ' '
