GALLANT ACTION
LIVE BOMB PICKED UP HURLED OUT OF DANGER MEDAL AWARDED TO SOLDIER (British Official Wireless) (United Press Association) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright), t RUGBY, Feb. 24. (Received Feb. 25, at 5.5 p.m.) The gallant action of Private J. E. Mott, of the Ist Battalion of the Essex Regiment, in picking up a live bomb which had been thrown into a crowded cafe at Haifa on Christmas Day and throwing it into the street, where it exploded, has been rewarded. The War Office announced that the King approved of the award of the medal of the British Empire, military division, for gallantry. The announcement stated that the Jordania Cafe in Haifa was crowded with soldiers and civilians when a bomb was thrown among them. Private Mott, who was seated at a table with some other men of the battalion, picked up the bomb and hurled it through a window into the street, where it exploded with great violence. Mott’s courageous act undoubtedly saved several lives and injuries to many of his companions.
