TOTALISATOR TICKETS RACEGOERS UNAWARE OF OFFENCE EVEN MAGISTRATE SURPRISED (Per United Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 24. “What offence is this? If I ask someone to .buy a ticket for me is that an offence? . It is certainly a new one on me.” These remarks were passed by Mr E. C. Levvey, S.M., in court this morning, when Albert Wallace Robinson was charged with aiding and abetting Horace Robinson, as agent, in the purchasing of two totalisator tickets. Mr Simes represented Robinson, who did not appear, a plea of guilty being entered. Mr Simes assured the magistrate that this action constituted an offence. • Senior Sergeant Felton explained that the defendant had got his 17-year-old son to purchase the tickets. He had explained that he was unaware that he was committing an offence. “This is a matter that is not generally known by the public,” said Mr Simes. “ The fact that a person in asking another to buy a totalisator ticket commits an offence as well as the purchaser is not generally appreciated. This sort of thing goes on hundreds of times every day of every race meeting.” “ I think we might treat this case as a warning and order him to pay costs,” declared the magistrate.
