FINAL COMPETITIVE TRIALS AUSTRALIAN RECORDS BROKEN SYDNEY, Jan. 29. (Received Jan. 30, at 6.45 p.m.) Australian records were broken at the final competitive trials for athletes to take part in the Empire Games. Fouche (South Africa), with 49ft 9iin, broke the record for the shot putt. Sutherland (Canada) added 18ft s|in to the previous best figures for the hammer throw of 145 ft 2|in. Mumford (Australia), Hampson (Australia) and Haley (Canada) broke lOsec in the 100 yards event. Quinn (New Zealand) was timed at 21 9-10 sec, only four-fifths of a second outside the Australian record, for the 220 yards. In this event Short (South Africa) registered 22 l-10sec and Holmes (England) 22 3-10 sec. All the runners eased up towards the finish except Quinn, who seemed to be striding at his top over the last 40 yards. Handley (England) broke the New South Wales record for 880 yards, taking Imin 55 l-ssec. The Australian record is Imin 55sec. Leckie (New Zealand) in the hammer throw reached 148 ft lin. Boot (New Zealand) covered 880 yards in Imin 56 l-10sec. Three New Zealand girls participated in invitation handicaps, the fourth division of which resulted: Lumley (scr) 1, Tong (3yds) 2. Coy (Canada) threw the discus 146 ft 2in, a record. Courtwright (Canada), threw the javelin 198 ft 7in—a New South Wales record.
Du Plessis pole-vaulted 13ft 4in—a record.
Dickinson (New South Wales) in the broad, jump set a new Australian record of 24ft 6Jin. Matthews (New Zealand) covered four miles in I9min 37sec, breaking another State record
