NOTES ON THE RACING
(Special to Daily Times) INVERCARGILL, Jan. 30. Irish Birdcatcher was never headed in the Belmont Hack Handicap. It was only a canter for him. King Willow was slow to find his feet but finished on well although he had little chance with the winner. The Fowle Memorial Handicap was also a three-horse race All Humbug carried a few more tickets * than Amelita, but the latter won easily at the finish. The pair raced on terms throughout, but in the straight All Humbug did not finish on and Amelita won easing up Dazzling Eyes finished from the back tc beat All Humbue who was sore. Cor third Eastern Chief making nis first appearance in public won the Orawra Steeplechase decisively . He outiumped the remainder and came home on his own Kelly the Crow fell half a mile from home when he looked like making a race of it with the winner Possum jumped well enough to be third and Bandy Boa was the only other horse to stand up
A 61b penalty did not stop Irish Birdcatcher in the Waiau Hack Handicap Last Posl was the only one to offer much jpposition but he was held safely Mona’s Song finished with a great run from the back, to beat Cone Peak for third The others were well beaten
Amelita scored ner second win when r-he won the Farewell Handicap with something to spare She disputed the lead with All Humbug most of the wav but had the race won half a mile from home AM Humbug did not finish on Smokr who struck trouble at the top of the straight finished with a great rush to be third He may have troubled the winner with a better run
