SWIMMING CARNIVAL

KAIKORAI CLUB’S FIXTURE

LARGE NUMBER OF ENTRIES Warm weather and bright sunshine favoured the Kaikorai Amateur Swimming Club’s carnival, which was held on Saturday afternoon at the Kaikorai baths. Last year’s carnival was cancelled owing to the infantile paralysis epidemic, but this year’s fixture was the most successful that has been held for some time, and the number of entries was the largest for several years. Representatives from country clubs were present, attracted by the opportunity of competing against the city club in fresh water. Their superiority was proved notably in the interclub relay race in which Taieri and Balclutha filled first and second places respectively. Other entries came from Invercargill, Milton, and Roxburgh, and city clubs were also well represented. The times recorded were very satisfactory for fresh water swimming and the number of close finishes added to the interest of the carnival. Special interest was also taken in the diving event, in which D. Freeman, the Otago diving chamgion, and Miss Rita Smith, the New ealand and Otago intermediate champion, took part. A novelty event, the balloon race, was won by B. Kerr, with W. .Wethey and Miss Schojfield second and third. The smooth running of the carnival was largely due to the efforts of the following officials:—Starter, Mr E. Sonntag; handicapper, Mr D. Pickard; diving judge, Mr Matthews; rope stewards, Messrs Peat and J. McTaggot; time-keepers, Messrs A. Grjegg and A. Baker; competitors’ stewards —Mrs McTaggot and Misses K. Ness, J. Huddart and O. Warren; competitors’ gate, Mr K. Nelson; announcer, Mr L. Lang; press steward, Mr L. Highfield; secretary, Mr F. Marett; time-keepers’ assistants, Messrs D. McLachlan and E. Moore.
