BAY OF PLENTY SEAT

THREE CANDIDATES ANNOUNCED (Per United Press Association) GISBORNE, Jan. 30 At a meeting of the Bay of Plenty executive of the National Party held at Gisborne on Saturday evening. Mr William Sullivan, Mayor of Whakatane, was selected as the official National candidate at the coming election There were five nominees, who were expected to address the meeting in succession Prior to the official meeting, however, the nominees conferred among themselves, and four decided to withdraw, leaving Mr Sullivan the sole nominee, the other nominees promising their support. Mr Sullivan’s nomination was thereupon officially confirmed by the executive.

Mr Sullivan, who is 48 years of age, has been Mayor of Whakatane for the past 12 years and occupies prominent positions on other local bodies. He is a building contractor and timber merchant. A meeting of the combined executive of the Labour Representation Committee, held at Tekeraka to-day to select a Labour candidate for the Bay of Plenty seat, chose Mr A. (Gordon Hultquist, the sitting member. There was no other nomination.

There will be at least three candidates for Bay of Plenty—Mr Sullivan (Nationalist), Mr Hultquist (Labour) and Mr G. T. Merry, of Opotiki, who announced himself some time ago as a Liberal Nationalist. Mr Merry was unsuccessful as the National candidate at the last election.
