Efforts are being made to secure a powerful naval boat to push its way through the ice and rescue them. Germany experienced the heaviest snowfall for nine years. Many rivers are frozen, holding up shipping. Rumania’s train services have been disorganised by snow. Wolves, frantic with hunger, attacked villagers and even appeared in the suburbs of Bucharest. Austria, Hungary and Czechoslovakia are covered with snow and ice. The Danube is blocked with shipping. BUS PLUNGES INTO TORRENT GERMAN TOURISTS KILLED ROME, Jan. 5. A motor bus skidded on ice at Bolanzo and plunged into a torrent. Five German tourists were killed and 13 seriously injured.

Even the crater of Vesuvius is snow-capped.
