CROQUET
OTAGO AND SOUTH ISLAND TOURNAMENT YESTERDAY’S GAMES The weather was again fine yesterday, and excellent progress was made in the various events at the Otago and South Island croquet, tournament. The lawns were keen and fast, and there were several all-round breaks made, play at all times being keenly followed by a good gallery of spectators, including visitors from New Plymouth, Tauranga, Hokitika and Christchurch. NOTES ON THE PLAY J. Tannock, conceding five bisques to J. Torrance, did not strike form until late in the game, Torrance winning by nine points. However, in his next game, against Mrs Robertson (Invercargill), Tannock played an almost faultless game, finishing with a brilliant double peel and well-played cannon to lie for a perfect rush to the peg and giving Mrs Robertson only two turns of play. Mrs Telfer (Gore) also quickly disposed of her opponent, Mrs Metsalf, L.P., in the Otago Singles. Commencing with a nicely played break of 11, Mrs Telfer wired Mrs Metcalf at the stick. In her next turn Mrs Telfer made three and baulked. Mrs Metcalf made two and broke down. Mrs Telfer went to the stick, peeled through rover and out in her next turn. Mrs Metcalf played a better game against Mrs Caverhill, the latter making a great recovery to win by two points. Mrs McLeod, Gore, is also playing good croquet, and looks like winning more than one event. To-day’s programme will be full of interesting games and a start will be made with the South Island Open Singles, which is the best of three throughout. The first set of matches this morning include the semifinals of the Handicap Doubles, in which Mesdames Robertson and Keen meet Mr and Mrs Kirk, and Mrs McLeod and Caverhill meet Mesdames Cornish and Metcalf. These will be followed by the semifinals of the Champion Doubles, in which Mesdames Robertson and Keen meet Mrs Millin and J. Tannock, and Mr McCreath and Mrs Caverhill meet Mesdames Telfer and McLeod.
