CORNWELL CUP
SEVEN RACES SAILED TWO CREWS WITH TWO WINS EACH TAURANGA AND PLIMMERTON (Per United Press Association) WELLINGTON, Jan. 0. Two crews in the 1938 Cornwell Cup contest now have two wins in hand, as Plimmerton and Tauranga won another race each at Plimmerton to-day, and the competition has now reached an interesting position. Both races to-day were sailed in a stiff breeze out of the north-west, and were marked by fine sailing. Tauranga overcame difficulties in both races, and the performance of that crew in the morning race, when it drew from almost last to second, four seconds behind the winning boat, Plimmerton, was exceedingly good. Paremata, Wellington, and Auckland each have a win, and the first crew to notch three wins will gain the trophy. In the morning race, the sixth of the series, Plimmerton sailed Nukumai, the Wellington boat, Tauranga sailed the Otago boat, and Manukau sailed the Auckland boat. The boats went away to a good start at 9.40 a.m. Tauranga, Christchurch, Paremata and Wellington crossed the line together, with the rest of the fleet only a few seconds behind. Fine Sailing by Tauranga On the first run the Tauranga skipper fell overboard, but the forward hand quickly brought the boat into the wind and the skipper clambered aboard. This mishap left Tauranga almost at the tail of the fleet, but the crew sailed a tenacious race and pulled up into second position, to provide one of the most exciting finishes of contest. Tauranga crossed the line four seconds behind Plimmerton, the winners. The order the first time round the course, which was windward and leeward, was: Plimmerton, Tauranga, Wellington, Otago, Manukau, Paremata, Wanganui, and_ Christchurch. Suva did not start in either of to-day’s races as the skipper had injured a hand and was not able to sail. , ~ The order for the second time round was; —Plimmerton, 30 seconds ahead of Tauranga, with Manukau, Wellington, Otago, Paremata, Christchurch, and Wanganui well behind the two leading boats. Plimmerton appeared to have a safe margin from Tauranga on the final beat to the finish, but it crossed the line from the wrong side and had to sail back and rectify the mistake. It succeeded with only seconds to spare from Tauranga. . . The finishing times and placmgs for the sixth race were:—
Plimmerton, lOhr 37min lOsec .. 1 Tauranga, lOhr 37min 14sec .. 2 Manukau, lOhr 40min' 40sec .. 3 Wellington, lOhr 40min 55sec .. 4 Otago, lOhr 41min lOsec .. .. 5 Paremata, lOhr 43min ssec .. b Wanganui, lOhr 49sec ssec .. 7 Christchurch, lOhr 49mm lOsec 8 Afternoon Race Despite the fact that their spinnaker block at the masthead was carried away on the second run on the triangular course in the afternoon race, the Tauranga crew managed to sail into the lead that carried its boat over the line ahead of Plimmerton for first place. The wind was still fresh to strong and the race was an exciting one, as Plimmerton put up a strong challenge to finish 38 seconds behind Tauranga. On the wind to the final buoy before the run to the finishing line, Tauranga made enough headway to win, though it was being rapidly overhauled by Plimmerton, who had a spinnaker set on the last leg. There were two capsizes during the race and Auckland retired. , . . The finishing times and placings for the seventh race, which started at 2.10 p.m., were:—
Tauranga (Billy Boy), 3hr 24min 30sec •• •• •• •* • • Plimmerton (OI), 3hr 25min Bsec 2 Wellington (Oakie), 3br 25mm 2Qsec •• .. •• •• • • Otago (Valeta Black), 3hr 27min Paremata (Valeta Blue), 3hr 28min 48sec & Other times were not taken. Manukau and Wanganui capsized. The first race to-morrow will start at 9.30 a.m.
