NEW ZEALAND ARTIST

LONDON EXHIBITION

(.From Our Own Correspondent) (By Air Mail)

LONDON, Dec. 1. Delightful painting of New Zealand. Australian, and English scenes are included in an exhibition at the Johnson Gallery. Kensington in which a New Zealand artist, Miss Gw'en W Nelson (Havelock North) is collaborating with her cousin, Miss Doris Robertson-Reid. Miss Nelson is showing about 40 water colours, and though she uses this medium for a very wide range and variety of subjects. her experiments are justified by lhcrv<tfharrning results. A study of “ Beeches. Virginia Water," and “Autumn Sussex," in which the artist captures a pleasing effect of sunlight and shadow, are perhaps the mosi attractive English scenes, and of the New Zealand pictures, three studies in warm sepia tones of " Middle Road. Hawke’s Bay,” “ Karaka Trees,” and “ Plantation.” are treated in an interesting manner But the Australian studies possibly reveal the artist at her best. “An Australian Dairy" is particularly charming, and the reflections in " The Hawkesbury River. NSW.” make a very pleasing picture. Miss Nelson's future plans are not as yet certain, but she will remain in England until March at least.
