OFFICIAL FORECAST OUTLOOK IMPROVED The following was the official weather forecast;— The present depression is passing eastwards off the Dominion and an anti-cyclone of slight extent is approaching across the Tasman Sea. Pressure is falling again over south-eastern Australia Indications are for: Winds.—South-westerly to southerly, strong in places on the east coast of the South Island and in parts of the Cook Strait area, but decreasing and otherwise light to moderate. Seas.—New Zealand Waters: Rather rough to rough south of Castlepoint and north of Farewell Spit, but decreasing; elsewhere moderate. Eastern Tasman Sea: Moderate southerly winds becoming variable and later tending northerly; seas considerable, but a decreasing swell. The morning was overcast, with a westerly wind, but - in the afternoon the skies cleared and fine, warm weather was experienced. The barometer rose in the morning, but fell in the afternoon, the reading at 5 p.m, being 29.87 inches. The maximum temperature was 76 degrees. WELLINGTON, Dec. 17. Heavy rain fell before 9 a.m., the remainder of the morning being dull, with occasional showers. The conditions improved during the afternoon, though the sky remained overcast. A light southerly wind was blowing. The minimum temperature last night was 53.4 degrees, and the maximum to-day 59.8 degrees. At 3.30 p.m. the barometer reading was 29.75 inches. CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 17. Continuous heavy rain fell from the early hours of the morning accompanied until mid-day by a gusty southwest wind. By the late afternoon the rain was lighter, but there was no sign of it stopping. The maximum temperature was 52.6 degrees. The barometer reading at 5 p.m. was 29,90 inches, and it was rising.
