PORTOBELLO NEWS
Early on Thursday morning heavy rain set in and continued for some hours, giving the ground a thorough soaking, much to the gratification of pastoralists and gardeners. The sixtieth annual show of the Otago Peninsula A. and P. Society will be held on the Portobello Show Ground to-day. The entries, which closed on Wednesday evening, are considered very satisfactory, and compare favourably with those of previous ye, The Port Chalmers-Portobello ferry steamer Terewai is on the slipway undergoing her annual overhaul. The passenger service is being maintained bv the launch Miro. . , „ The Christmas visitors to Portobello are arriving daily, and the available houses and cribs being occupied, whilst those with rooms to let report full houses.” It is to be deplored that the township of Portobello is without a public convenience, and this fact, together with the condition of the playing area, does not redound to the credit of the powers that be. Thf> somewhat stormy weather of the past few days has seriously interfered ■with the operations of local fishing craft, hence there is a scarcity of fish, with corresponding higher prices.
