A VISITOR FROM MALAYA
Mrs W. G. Ayton, of Ipoh, the Federated Malay States, arrived last evening from the North jsland, where She has been holiday-making for a month, and will spend Christmas with, her mother, Mrs E. Asnn, of Littlebourne. In March her husband will come to New Zealand for a fishing trip, and later take her and her small daughter to Great Britain and Europe before they return to Ipoh. Mrs Ayton is very much interested in Y.W.C.A. work in Malaya. In 1935 she was president’ of the Malayan Y.W.C.A., and for three years has been president of the local Ipoch branch. The Ipoh branch conducts lectures, discussions, and classes on handwork, cookery, etiquette, etc., European culture being greatly sought after by the native population. As Chinese, Malays, Indians, Cingalese, Eurasians, Japanese, and Europeans are included in the membership, the Y.W.C.A. affords excellent opportunities for the exchange of ideas and for fostering an international outlook. Classes in Mandarin —the language of high-caste Japanese —are conducted for Europeans and Malays both, with splendid results. . Everyone in Ipoh is keen on sport. There is a first-class golf course of 27 holes, which is soon to be a champion course, a swimming pool, and badminton and lawn tennis courts. The men play Rugby and cricket, in which they are joined by the Orientals.
