WAIKOUAITI COUNTY

MEETING OF COUNCIL A meeting, of the Waikouaiti County Council was held yesterday; present— Crs Gilmore (chairman), Laley, Box. and McCallum. CORRESPONDENCE The Main Highways Board wrote asking that special attention should be given to the proper conditioning and maintenance of main highways during the Christmas and New Year holidays.—Received. A petition signed by 42 residents ot Purakahui and Osborne townships was received asking the council. to form part of Annie and Rowland streets to allow access to Osborne township, and that facilities be provided to enable ratepayers to vote in Dunedin in connection with the elections for members of the County Council in conjunction with the election of the member for the Otago Harbour Board.—Received. A letter was received from Mr A. Hicks, Evansdale; asking the council to have the gorse cleared from the section heXt to his.—lt was decided to notify Mr Hicks that the council had no jurisdiction ih the matter. A letter was received from the Eaucation Board of Otago asking the council to clean out the channel on the road at the side of the school residence at Warrington.—lt Was decided to attend to the matter. ' No. 16 District Highways Council advised that the Highways Board had decided that, in approved cases only, to pay a subsidy of £1 for £1 for the construction and maintenance of footpaths.—Received. The commissioner of Crown lands wrote asking the council to hand to the Taieri County Council a portion of the rates received from J. M. Graham for improvements to the access to his runs.—Received. A letter was received from the secretary of the Aramoana Progress League protesting about the state of the Port Chalmers-Aramoana highway. —To be notified that this highway is being attended to. k A petition signed by 21 residents of Heyward’s Point was submitted asking the council to open up the surveyed road between Heyward’s Point road and the Port Chalmers-Aramoana highway, to enable one bus to convey the school children to school, as the Education Board was considering taking off one bus, as the cost is toe high.—lt was decided that the inspector and the member for the district should give an estimate of the cost at the next meeting. A letter was received from S. Wilkinson, Nenthorn. complaining about the broom on the road leading to his property.—To be attended to. A request was received from Father Monaghan, Seacliff, asking the council to deposit the spoil from the corner which was to be cut away near the Seacliff asylum in front of the Catholic Church.—Request granted. A letter was received from the chief electrical engineer, Public Works Department, stating that the Minister of Public Works was anxious to have a detailed survey made of the whole position relating to electric supply service in rural areas and asking the council to fill in a questionnaire.—lt was decided to refer the matter to the Otago Electric Power Board. An application was received for a licence to erect a private telephone line to Dr G. P. Fitzgerald’s at Karltane.—Granted, provided the work w r as done to the satisfaction of the Telegraph Department. A letter was received from the Commissioner of Transport, expressing appreciation of the offers made by local authorities to display road safety posters in their areas.—Received. The finance report was received and accounts amounting to £334 14s were passed for payment. INSPECTOR’S REPORT The county inspector (Mr T. Lang) submitted the following > ->port;— Hawksbury Riding.—Mill road and Orbell’s road have been graded, watertables cleaned out on the road to Buckland’s crossing, and the approaches to the ford improved. The subsidence on Chisholm’s road has been filled with clay, and will be metalled immediately. The crossing on the river near Macraes’ Flat has been improved, by raising it with schist rock. The metalling contract at Nenthom will probably be commenced next month, but some formation work will have to be done before metalling the road. Merton Riding.—A blocked culvert near Garden Bush has been opened and cleaned out. and other surface work done in that locality. General surface work has been done on Apes’s road, and

a slip cleared. The trench for the pipes to drain the hollow at Karitane School is nearly finished. Ditches and watertables have been cleaned out on Warrington roads. The road to Warrington Beach Is about three chains m length, the formation of which would cost £5. The metalling would cost an additional £lO. The extension Of this road to the recreation ground is partly through private property ’ Blueskin Riding.—Forty-five yards of metal from the crusher were spread on Purakanui School road, and 12 yards on Purakanui road. Metal has been raked in and blinded on this road. The lower end of the Short Cut has been graded. As complaints are being made about omnibuses using Long Beach road, I recommend the erection of a notice at the top of the road, prohibiting vehicles over a certain size from using the road, as it Is both narrow and St North-East Valley Riding.—Very little work has been done In this riding during the month. The footpaths at Sawyers’ Bay will be attended to before the holidays. MAIN HIGHWAYS Evansdale-Merton (via Seacliff) highway.—This road has been graded twice during the month, and the remainder of the screenings spread on the road. . Dunedin-Waitat, (via Leith Valley) Highway.—A portion of a culvert near the Saddle has been re-covered with broadleaf timber, and water-tables and ditches cleaned out between Ferguson’s and Burns’s Creeks. Port Chalmers-Waitati Highway.— Three hundred yards of metal have been crushed at the Purakanui quarry, and spread over 60 chains of this road* the road having previously been scarified. Port Chalmers-Aramoana Highway. —Two hundred and eleven yards of 1 Jin metal have been snread over the road between Deborah Bay and Pulling Point, and ditches cleaned out. and a culvert repaired. The power grader will probably commence within a few days to grade in the mile of new metal near Aramoana. and to trade the whole of the road. _______
