OAMARU MARKETS The whole of the district has undergone a complete change for the better since the drought broke. Every part of the district has received excellent rains this week, and there has already been a big growth in the pastures, and wheat, oat. and barley crops, etc.; have already shown considerable improvement. with much better prospects for the harvest. There has been a big demand for rape and turnips, and farmers are now assured of their stock feed position for fattening purposes. Oats.—This market remains very firm. Last season’s Algerians are very scarce in Canterbury, and as there will be a fair sowing of these In the autumn it is anticipated prices will rule high. There has been some buying by farmers of feed oats, as they anticipate their oat crops will be short. Wheat.—There are no alterations to report in the local wheat market. Fowl wheat supplies are being filled from under-grade wheat, and stocks of good wheat are hard to secure. Owing to the anticipated shortage of the wheat crop in the South Island, it will not be possible to make shipments of wheat to the North Island in the coming season. as all supplies will be required within the South Island. Chaff—This is a very firm market in Canterbury, with a good inquiry. Chaff is quoted at £6 10s. f.0.b.. 5.1., Lyttelton, and Marlborough is also quoting the same, supplies being short. Seeds—There is a good demand for rape and turnips, and there promises to be a big sowing between now and the New Year as soon as the weather takes up. The crops which have been sown are making excellent growth since the rain, and there should be ample supplies of feed early m the new year. There is a firm tone about all seed markets owing to the possibility of short crops. The area in Canterbury entered for certification of ryegrass this year is well below last season. It is anticipated there will be very little local seed shut up this season.
