PROTECTION OF INDUSTRIES GOVERNMENT POLICY CHANGED CANBERRA, Dec. 8. The Minister of Customs, Mr T. W. White, announced in the House of Representatives that the Government would abandon the licensing system, on which its trade diversion policy was based, and would revert. to the use of tariffs to protect Australian industries. RACING AND GAMING NEW SOUTH WALES BILL SYDNEY, Dec. 8. The Premier (Mr B. S. Stevens), introducing the Racing and Gaming Bill in the Assembly, said it involved a nominal loss of £BO,OOO a year in reduced taxation. Improvement in horse-racing attendances was expected, however, and the greyhound tax should yield £25,000 a year. The provisions of the Bill include reduced course admission charges and a reduction in taxation on bookmakers. UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE THE SCHEME ABANDONED CANBERRA, Dec. 7. The Federal Government has decided to abandon unemployment insurance owing to the refusal of several States to co-operate, but it will persevere with the national health insurance plan early in the new year. MINISTER RESIGNING A COMMERCIAL APPOINTMENT SYDNEY, Dec. 8. Mr E. A. Buttenshaw is resigning his position as Minister of Lands, having been appointed managing director of Farmers and Graziers’ Co-op. Company, Ltd., in succession to Sir Arthur Trethewan. who died on November 27.
