UNEMPLOYED WORKERS

NATIONAL MOVEMENT MEETING OF DUNEDIN BRANCH A general meeting of the Dunedin branch of the National Unemployed Workers’ Movement was held in the Trades Hall. Cr M Silverstone presided over a large attendance of members. The organising report showed that 15 new members had joined up, two had rejoined, and 16 had received full-time work on rotational jobs in and around the city. The secretary reported that he had interviewed the local district employment officer on the complaints tabled at last meeting, and he had also attended two ballots where 19 men were drawn for rotational work, namely, 10 for the Sawyers’ Bay job and nine for the Portobello job. He had visited the Waitati camp by request, where a delegate was appointed and a large number of the men joined the movement. A few complaints from the men were left in his hands to deal with. The secretary was instructed to write to Mr P. Fraser (Minister of Health) for information in regard to the deputation that waited on him when he was in Dunedin recently. It was agreed on the recommendation of the executive that the classification of all single men in the city, who are fit for heavy Work or otherwise, should be secured before a meeting was arranged on their behalf. Complaints were heard in regard to men not being attended to at certain windows at the local Labour Bureau, and these were left to the president and secretary to investigate. The winners of the two 10s free grocery orders were Messrs Byers and Curro. An order to the value of 10s was granted to a member in distressed circumstances. The notice of motion tabled at the last meeting in regard to the appointing of the Executive Committee was dealt with to the satisfaction of all the members. The secretary was instructed to thank the Minister of Labour (Mr H. T. Armstrong) for various concessions granted recently, and also for the way the correspondence received from the branch had been acknowledged and attended to. A collection was taken up on behalf of the local Spanish Aid Medical Committee.
